Hinomoto C142, C144, C172 and C174: which is which?
The C142 and C144 feature a Toyosha CS86. The C172 and C174 feature a Toyosha CS100. Each engine type is available as 2WD (C142, C172) and as 4WD (C144, C174).

Please note: head gasket and piston rings are not interchangeable between the CS86 and the CS100, because the bore is different. Always order based on engine type.
The workshop manual covers the C142 and C144 completely. The C172 and C174 are not included. Therefore, we do not provide capacities, adjustment values, or tightening torques for the C172 and C174, as these have not been confirmed. Fill oil to the dipstick level.
Buying a Hinomoto C142, C144, C172 and C174: what to look out for?
- Head gasket and cylinder head: this is the well-known weak point of these engines. Ask about coolant loss, boiling over, white smoke, and sludge under the oil cap.
- Cooling system: check the radiator core, radiator cap, water pump, and V-belt. A defective head gasket usually follows overheating.
- Front axle (4WD): check the oil seals for leaks and the oil for water. On Japanese imports, the front axle oil has often never been replaced.
- Oil: transmission oil and hydraulic filter have usually never been replaced on imports. Factor in a service.

What oil to use? SAE 80W, API GL-3 or GL-4 for transmission and hydraulics. The manual does not specify an engine oil type, we supply 15W-40.
