Head bolt tightening sequence Mitsubishi L2E and L3E

Always tighten the head bolts in the correct sequence and in two to three stages up to the final torque. The main bolts (M10) to 73.5–83.4 N·m, the sub bolt (M8) to 19.6–29.4 N·m. Use a new head gasket and do not apply any sealant or gasket compound.

  • L2A / L2C / L2E (8 bolts): top row 6 – 3 – 5, middle row 8 – 4 – 7, bottom row 2 – 1. Bolt 5 is the sub bolt (M8).
  • L3A / L3C / L3E (11 bolts): top row 11 – 7 – 5 – 10, middle row 9 – 4 – 6 – 8, bottom row 2 – 1 – 3. Bolt 10 is the sub bolt (M8).

Always recheck the head bolts before adjusting the valve clearance. The valve clearance is 0.25 mm cold, for both intake and exhaust.

Parts for the head and adjustment: cylinder head bolts L3A/L3C/L3E, head gasket L2E or gasket set L3E, and injectors. Order based on your full type designation and bore size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the torque setting for the cylinder head bolts of an L3E?

The main bolts (M10) are torqued to 73.5–83.4 N·m (7.5–8.5 kgf·m) and the sub bolt (M8) to 19.6–29.4 N·m (2.0–3.0 kgf·m), in two to three stages and in the prescribed sequence.

What is the valve clearance of the Mitsubishi L2E and L3E?

0.25 mm cold for both the intake and exhaust valve. Only adjust the valve clearance after rechecking the head bolts.

What is the displacement of an L3E?

0.952 liters (3 cylinders, 76 mm bore, 70 mm stroke). The L2E has 0.635 liters with the same bore and stroke but two cylinders.
