Mitsubishi L2A, L2C, L2E, L3A, L3C and L3E maintenance: oil and filters

Good Mitsubishi L3E maintenance (and that of the L2E) comes down to two things: fresh oil on time and the right filters. These engines aren't fussy, but they do appreciate clean oil and an unobstructed cooling system. Below you'll find the correct quantities from the workshop manual and which filters you need.

Suitable for the entire series: Mitsubishi L2A, L2C, L2E, L3A, L3C and L3E. The filters are largely the same; the oil capacity differs between the two- and three-cylinder versions.

Engine oil and quantity

Use a good diesel engine oil, in practice a 15W-40 of API grade CD or higher (at low temperatures, 10W-30 if needed). The correct quantity according to the manual:

Model Oil capacity full / empty Extra with filter change
L2E (2-cylinder) 2.4 / 1.4 l + approx. 0.5 l (oil filter)
L3E (3-cylinder) 3.0–4.8 / 1.5–3.0 l + approx. 0.5 l (oil filter)

The stated range for the L3E depends on the application (different oil pans). Always check with the dipstick and top up to between min and max. When changing the oil, tighten the drain plug to 49.0–58.8 N·m and the oil filter to 10.8–12.7 N·m; an oil filter should otherwise simply be tightened by hand after coating the rubber gasket with fresh oil.

Oil filter, fuel filter and air filter

The L series uses a paper oil filter, a fuel filter and (depending on the machine) a paper or oil-bath air filter. Replace the oil filter with every oil change, the fuel filter periodically or as soon as the engine loses power, and the air filter as soon as it's visibly dirty. A clogged air filter causes black smoke and power loss.

Maintenance schedule (general guideline)

The schedule below is a practical guideline; always follow the maintenance schedule for your specific machine.

When What
Daily / before use Check oil level, coolant, air filter and leaks
Every approx. 100 operating hours Change engine oil and oil filter, check V-belt tension and bolts
Every approx. 250–500 operating hours Replace fuel filter and air filter (element), check valve clearance (0.25 mm cold)
Annually Change coolant, complete inspection

Maintenance parts in stock: engine oil filter, the complete L3E filter set (oil, fuel and air) and glow plugs for a smooth start after maintenance. Not sure about the right filters? Order using your engine number.

Frequently asked questions

How much oil goes into a Mitsubishi L3E?

Depending on the oil pan, 3.0 to 4.8 liters, plus about 0.5 liters extra if you also replace the oil filter. Always check with the dipstick. The L2E takes 2.4 liters.

What engine oil does the L2E or L3E need?

A good diesel engine oil, in practice 15W-40 of API CD or higher; 10W-30 if needed in cold conditions.

How often should I change the oil?

As a guideline, every 100 operating hours or at least annually, together with the oil filter. Follow the maintenance schedule for your machine.
