Proper maintenance is the reason so many Yanmar 2TNV70, 3TNV70 and 3TNV76 engines still run perfectly after thousands of operating hours. In this blog you'll find the complete factory maintenance schedule, the correct oil and coolant specifications, filter part numbers and V-belt tension — all sourced directly from the Yanmar workshop manual, translated into practical terms.
Suitable for the entire series: Yanmar 2TNV70, 3TNV70 and 3TNV76 (Komatsu 2D70E, 3D70E, 3D76E). The intervals are factory guidelines; heavy use, dusty conditions or poor fuel quality call for shorter intervals.

| Cooling system | Check coolant level and top up | Daily |
| Check and clean radiator fins | Every 250 hours | |
| Check and tension V-belt | First time after 50 hours, then every 250 hours | |
| Drain cooling system, flush and fill with new coolant | Every 1000 hours or annually (whichever comes first) | |

Yanmar specifies an engine oil that meets at least API CD or higher, ACEA E-3/E-4/E-5 or JASO DH-1. Choose the viscosity based on the outside temperature: SAE 10W-30 covers roughly -20 to +30 °C, SAE 15W-40 is the logical all-rounder for Dutch conditions (approx. -10 to +40 °C). Do not use oil additives and never mix oil types.
| Engine | Crankcase capacity (dipstick max/min) |
|---|---|
| 2TNV70 (VM/VH) | 1.6 / 0.8 L |
| 2TNV70 (CH) | 2.3 / 1.3 L |
| 3TNV70 (CL/VM/VH) | 2.8 / 1.5 L |
| 3TNV70 (CH) | 3.5 / 2.0 L |
| 3TNV76 (VM) | 3.4 / 1.8 L |
Note: these values are for the standard "deep" oil pan. The actual capacity depends on the oil pan fitted by the machine manufacturer — if in doubt, check your machine's manual and always top up according to the dipstick.
Changing the oil: with the engine at operating temperature, remove the drain plug, drain the oil and refit the plug with 19.6–23.5 N·m. Remove the oil filter (OEM 119305-35150 for all three engines), clean the mounting surface, lightly oil the gasket of the new filter and hand-tighten until it seats, then 3/4 turn with the filter wrench. Fill, wait three minutes, check the level.
Use a Long Life Coolant (LLC) or Extended Life Coolant (ELC) — or alternatively a conventional ethylene/propylene glycol coolant — always mixed with (preferably demineralised) water, never pure water. Never mix different types or colours of coolant together. Replace the coolant every 1000 operating hours or annually. The engine itself holds 0.9 L; the total system capacity depends on your machine's radiator and hoses.
| Filter | OEM number (2TNV70/3TNV70/3TNV76) | At Shop4trac |
|---|---|---|
| Oil filter | 119305-35150 | oil filter + 5L 15W40 set (SKU-15W402/2) |
| Fuel filter | 119810-55650 | fuel filter (SKU-150007) |
| Mesh filter (water separator) | 171081-55910 | — |
| Air filter | Machine-specific | See machine model — e.g. filter set TYM T194–T254 with 3TNV70 (SKU-100126) |
Order smart: replace the oil and fuel filters together at every service. With the oil filter + 15W40 engine oil maintenance set (SKU-15W402/2) and a fuel filter (SKU-150007) you'll have everything you need for a 250-hour service in one go.
A loose V-belt means poor alternator charging and a slipping water pump pulley — and therefore overheating. Check the tension by pressing on the belt with your thumb (± 98 N force) at the longest free section. The deflection should stay within these values (position A = between crankshaft and alternator pulley, B = between alternator and water pump pulley, C = between water pump and crankshaft pulley):
| Belt | Position A | Position B | Position C |
|---|---|---|---|
| New V-belt (run < 5 min) | 8–12 mm | 5–8 mm | 7–11 mm |
| Used V-belt | 10–14 mm | 7–10 mm | 9–13 mm |
To tension the belt, loosen the alternator's adjustment bolt and push the alternator outward. If the belt sits at the bottom of the pulley groove or shows cracks, oil or fraying: replace it. Run a new belt for 5 minutes, then check again against the "used" values.
Drain the water separator every 50 hours (a red ring in the sight glass means water in the bowl) and replace the filter element every 500 hours. After any work on the fuel system, bleed it: with an electric lift pump this is simple — leave the ignition on "ON" for 10–15 seconds.
