Mitsubishi S3L & S4L Head Bolt Tightening Sequence

Mitsubishi S3L and S4L head bolt tightening sequence

The head bolts are tightened to 83.4–93.2 N·m , in several increasing stages and in the correct order — spiraling outward from the center. The front of the engine is on the left.

  • S3L / S3L2 (11 head bolts) — top: 8-4-2-7; middle: 6-1-3-5; bottom: 10-9-11.
  • S4L / S4L2 (14 head bolts) — top: 10-4-2-5-7; middle: 8-6-1-3-9; bottom: 14-12-11-13.

How to Tighten the Head Bolts

  1. Install clean, freely turning head bolts and tighten them by hand.
  2. Tighten all bolts in the specified order to about half of the final torque.
  3. Tighten them in the same order to the full torque of 83.4–93.2 N·m.
  4. After running in, check the valve clearance (0.25 mm, cold) and adjust if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the torque setting for the head bolts of a Mitsubishi S3L/S4L?

83.4 to 93.2 N·m (8.5–9.5 kgf·m), tightened in multiple stages and in the prescribed order from the center outward.

What is the valve clearance of the Mitsubishi S3L/S4L?

0.25 mm for both the intake and exhaust valves, measured on a cold engine.

Should I tighten the bolts with oil or dry?

According to the workshop manual, the standard bolts and nuts should be tightened dry, meaning no oil on the thread and fitted with a spring washer.
