Hinomoto C142 and C144 maintenance schedule and adjustment values

This is the maintenance schedule for the Hinomoto C142 and C144, including the adjustment values from the workshop manual. You will also learn how to adjust valve clearance, V-belt, clutch, brakes, and toe-in.

Hinomoto C174 workshop maintenance

Suitable for the entire series: Hinomoto C142, C144, C172, and C174. The values in this blog apply to the C142 and C144 (CS86). The C172 and C174 (CS100) are not mentioned in the manual. For those models, adjustment values and tightening torques have not been confirmed.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 maintenance intervals

When What
Daily Check fuel filter glass for water
After the first 50 hours (also after overhaul) Replace transmission and hydraulic oil and hydraulic filter
Every 100 hours or every two weeks Check injection pump oil level
Every 200 hours Replace fuel filter, replace transmission and hydraulic oil and hydraulic filter
Every 400 hours Change injection pump oil (200 ml engine oil), clean and grease 2WD front wheel bearings
Every six months Remove injectors and install new gasket ring

The workshop manual does not provide an engine oil interval. Fill the tank after work to prevent condensation. Bleed the fuel system after every filter change.

How often do you change the transmission oil? After the first 50 hours and then every 200 hours, along with the hydraulic filter.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 valve clearance adjustment

Adjust the valve clearance on a cold engine. The crankshaft rotates 240 degrees between cylinders, the firing order is 1-3-2.

  1. Remove the valve cover.
  2. Measure with the valve closed: intake 0.30 mm, exhaust 0.35 mm.
  3. Adjust the adjuster, tighten the locknut to 44 Nm, and measure again.
  4. Reinstall the cover and tighten the valve cover nuts to 2 to 3 Nm.

Why measure cold? 0.30 and 0.35 mm are the values provided by the manual for a cold engine. A value for a warm engine is not listed.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 V-belt and clutch adjustment

Press the V-belt midway between the alternator pulley and the crankshaft pulley. The deflection should be 8 to 10 mm. A loose V-belt is a common cause of overheating, and head gasket damage in this engine usually occurs after overheating.

Adjust the free play of the clutch pedal using the adjustment rod to 15 to 20 mm.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 brakes and toe-in adjustment

Adjust the brake pedals using the turnbuckle in the middle of each rod until the travel is 20 to 30 mm and equal on the left and right. Measure the brake shoes: below 2.0 mm they are worn out. The brake drum may be a maximum of 122 mm.

Measure the toe-in between the rim edges at axle height. For 2WD this is 3 to 10 mm, for 4WD a maximum of 5 mm toe-in or 5 mm toe-out.

Tip: for the 200-hour service, order the Filterset C142-C174 (SKU-10035) and 2 bottles of Transmissieolie GL-4 10 L (SKU-15W402).
