Hinomoto C142 and C144 engine oil and fluids: which oil and how much?

Which engine oil and how much goes into the Hinomoto C142 and C144? Below you will find all capacities, oil types, where to drain and fill, and how many bottles to order.

Hinomoto C174 engine oil change

Suitable for the entire series: Hinomoto C142, C144, C172 and C174. The capacities below apply to the C142 and C144 (CS86). The C172 and C174 (CS100) are not mentioned in the workshop manual. For these models, capacities are not confirmed. Always fill according to the dipstick for those.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 capacities

System Capacity
Engine oil with filter 2.5 L (later engines with two drain plugs: 3.0 L)
Cooling system 3.0 L
Transmission, rear axle and hydraulics (shared) approx. 17 L
Front axle center housing (4WD) 1.5 L
Front axle final drive per side (4WD) 0.4 L
Injection pump separate sump 200 ml engine oil

Transmission, rear axle and hydraulics share the same oil. The hydraulic filter therefore also filters the transmission oil.

How much engine oil goes into the C142 and C144? 2.5 L with filter. Later engines with two drain plugs take 3.0 L.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 oil types

  • Transmission and hydraulics: SAE 80W, API GL-3 or GL-4.
  • Front axle: SAE 80, API GL-3 or GL-4.
  • Engine oil: the manual does not specify an oil type. We supply 15W-40.
  • Injection pump: engine oil.

The manual does not specify an oil change interval for the engine oil. If you are storing the tractor, change the engine oil and filter before storage.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 transmission oil draining and filling

The transmission dipstick and filler cap are located on top of the transmission, in front of the seat. Park the tractor on a level surface and lower the 3-point hitch before checking the level.

The drain plug is located at the bottom rear of the rear axle housing, behind the drawbar. Remove the drawbar to access it and lower the hitch. When draining, some oil remains in the housing. Therefore, fill according to the dipstick and not by the liter count.

The hydraulic filter is located on the left side of the transmission housing. Coat the sealing ring with clean oil and tighten the filter by hand.

How much oil goes into the transmission? Approx. 17 L, but the dipstick determines the final level.

When should you change the transmission oil? After the first 50 hours, also after an overhaul, and every 200 hours thereafter. Also replace the hydraulic filter at that time.

Hinomoto C142 and C144 injection pump and front axle

The injection pump has its own sump with 200 ml of engine oil and is not lubricated by the engine. If the pump runs dry, the cam will wear and output will become too low. Check the level every 100 hours or every two weeks and change the oil every 400 hours.

On 4WD models, you also fill the front axle: 1.5 L in the center housing and 0.4 L in each final drive. On Japanese imports, the front axle oil has often never been replaced. When changing, check for water in the oil and check the oil seals.
