A Mitsubishi MT161, MT181, MT201, MT221, MT241 or MTZ that sits idle for months often comes out of storage in worse shape than it went in — unless you prepare it properly. The factory manual includes a complete storage protocol, and this particular series has a few clever tricks that many owners aren't aware of. This is how you avoid a stuck clutch, a dead battery, and a clogged fuel system come spring.

Step 9 is typically Mitsubishi and worth mentioning: under the clutch pedal there's a hook that lets you lock the pedal in the depressed position. A clutch that's pressed against the flywheel for months on end will stick — the classic spring complaint of "the clutch won't release anymore." With the hook engaged, this simply can't happen. So when buying a machine that's been in storage, always check whether the previous owner knew about this.
Indoor storage is always preferable. If the machine has to stay outside, use a breathable cover and only place it over the machine once the engine has cooled down completely — a cover over a hot exhaust is a real fire risk. Cap the exhaust with a can or bag to keep out rain, and occasionally check for condensation under the cover.
Connect the battery, turn the fuel valve to ON, and check all fluid levels (engine oil, coolant, transmission oil). Release the clutch pedal from the hook, check the tire pressure, and go over the grease nipples. After the first start, let the engine warm up thoroughly and check for leaks.
