The Kubota GB series is a range of compact 4WD mini tractors that Kubota built for the Japanese market from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. In the Netherlands and Belgium they're widely available as grey imports: small, agile, virtually indestructible, and powered by engines that have proven their worth for decades. In this buying guide, we cover all models, versions and indicative prices, plus the points you really need to check before buying.
Suitable for the entire series: Kubota GB13 (also D9/DA5/N version), GB14 (B9), GB15 (B9/S), GB16 (K/FK/H), GB18 (K/FK) and GB20 (K/FK).
The series is divided into two chassis generations. The GB13, GB14 and GB15 share a compact chassis with a 1270 mm wheelbase; the GB16, GB18 and GB20 are a size larger with a 1350 mm wheelbase, a 20-litre tank and a 3-point hitch according to the JIS 0 standard. All models are four-stroke, three-cylinder, water-cooled diesels (E-TVCS) with four-wheel drive.

Note the engine difference within the series: the GB13 and GB14 have the smaller D662/D722 engines (bore 64/67 mm), while the GB15 and GB16 share the D905. Engine parts such as head gaskets and pistons are therefore not interchangeable between, for example, a GB14 and a GB15 — always check the engine code on the ID plate.
The letter codes after the type number reveal a lot about the equipment. The most important ones:

All versions have wet disc brakes, a limited-slip differential and position control on the hitch. What can you do with it? With 13–20 hp and 535–1207 rpm on the PTO, you can easily run a 90–140 cm tiller, a lawn mower, a small shaker or a single-share plough. The difference mainly lies in reserve power: a GB13 is fine for the vegetable garden and lawn, while a GB18/GB20 noticeably pulls through more easily on heavier ground and with wider implements.
The GB series was built from approximately 1996 to 2001 (indicative, varies per model) and is only available second-hand. A concrete reference point from the trade: a Kubota GB15 from 2001 with 700 operating hours, fully inspected including major service and with warranty, was listed by a Belgian dealer in June 2026 for €4,700. Based on current listings, these are realistic indicative prices (indicative, strongly dependent on hours, condition and version):

Continuously variable FK versions and machines with a working bi-speed turn, creeper gear or new tyres are at the higher end of the price range. Feel free to add €500 – 1,000 extra for a mounted tiller or mower deck, provided it's in good condition.
1. Don't blindly trust the hour meter. The mechanical meter cable on this generation often breaks, meaning the counter may have been stationary for years. Assess wear on pedal rubbers, pivot points, the PTO stub and shaft play — not the clock.
2. Test the clutch thoroughly. On machines that have stood outside or unused for a long time, the clutch plate can rust onto the flywheel. If the pedal feels dead or the tractor keeps driving with the pedal pressed, expect to have to split the tractor. A new clutch plate for the GB13–GB15 (SKU-3016014) or a complete clutch kit for the GB16–GB20 (VAR-0064) is available, but labour costs are the biggest expense.
3. A cold start tells you everything. Have the engine started cold: 2–10 seconds of preheating and it should start up promptly. Prolonged white-blue smoke points to injectors or moisture; persistent black smoke to a clogged air filter or too much oil. Check whether the glow plug light on the dashboard lights up.
4. Hydraulics and hitch. Lift an implement (or weight) and check whether the hitch holds it for several minutes. A slowly sinking or jerky hitch usually points to contaminated hydraulic oil, a clogged strainer or sticking plungers — solvable, but a negotiating point. 5. Cooling and charging current. Check the radiator for dirt between the fins and see whether the charge indicator light goes out when the engine is running — the flywheel alternator with rectifier is a known weak point on this generation.
6. Paperwork and safety. Japanese imports often lack a ROPS bar, seatbelt or EU documentation. Registration requirements apply for use on public roads; check with the RDW (Netherlands) or DIV (Belgium) for the current rules for your situation (last checked: July 2026).
7. Parts availability. Official Kubota dealers offer little to no support for grey imports. Fortunately, wear parts, filters, tyres in sizes 8-16 and 8-18, seals and electrics are readily available — you'll find almost everything directly in our webshop.
For every purchased GB without a maintenance history, we recommend a full service straight away. For the GB15–GB20 there's a complete filter set with air, fuel and oil filter (SKU-10050, € 34.50). Combine with 15W40 engine oil (SKU-15W40) and GL-4 transmission/hydraulic oil (SKU-15W402).
