Does your Yanmar Ke-13, Ke-14, Ke-16 or Ke-18 not start, run irregularly, or does a warning light come on? This diagnostic guide follows the official troubleshooting table from the Yanmar Ke-series manual, supplemented with practical field experience.
Suitable for the entire series: Yanmar Ke-13, Ke-14, Ke-16 and Ke-18 (all versions).
Check in this order: are the main gear lever and the PTO lever both in neutral? Otherwise the starter safety switch will block the starter motor — this is by far the most common "fault". Next: dead or low battery (charge it), loose or corroded battery terminals (clean, tighten and grease), a blown slow-blow fuse, and only as a last step a defective starter motor.
| Check | Solution |
|---|---|
| Fuel in the tank? | Refuel and bleed: valve open, key on "on" for 5–10 sec (electric feed pump) |
| Fuel valve set to "C" (closed)? | Turn valve to "O" (open) |
| Fuse blown? | Replace (fuse box); if it blows again → look for a short circuit |
| Pre-glow lamp not lighting up? | Check the fuse; then test the glow plugs |
According to the table, irregular running is caused by water in the fuel (drain the water separator, use fresh diesel) or a clogged fuel filter (clean or replace). Loss of power almost always starts with a clogged air filter. All intervals and filter numbers can be found in the Yanmar Ke-series filter guide.
| Light | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Oil pressure | Oil level too low or oil too thin | Stop, check the level, top up; use the correct 10W-30. A light that stays on for more than 30 sec after starting suggests a faulty oil pressure switch |
| Charging current | Fan belt loose or damaged | Tension the belt (10–15 mm at 10 kg) or replace it |
| Water temperature | Overheating | Let it idle, open the hood, allow it to cool down; then check coolant, belt, radiator screen and oil level |
If the implement won't lift, nine times out of ten the hydraulic shut-off valve is closed — open it. If the implement won't lower with the "down" lever: also check the shut-off valve first, then check the autowire adjustment. Poor or uneven braking: adjust pedal play to 25–35 mm, equal on both left and right. A squeaking brake pedal or one that doesn't return properly indicates a broken return spring or dry pivot points (lubricate them).
Two reassurances from the manual: a "hiss" sound when turning the wheel fully is the relief valve of the power steering and is normal. A click ("clunk") when steering on V versions is the dual-speed clutch engaging — also normal. If you can't shift the range lever, first straighten the steering wheel: the dual-speed mechanism blocks operation as long as the front axle is turned.
From the experience of owners of older Yanmar tractors: if the entire lighting or dashboard suddenly cuts out, check not only the fuses but also the fusible link (main fuse wire) and the wiring harness for chafed insulation — especially where the harness runs along the chassis and behind the side panels. A faulty voltage regulator can also cause short circuits and blown fuses. Never work on the wiring with the battery connected, and replace damaged insulation immediately: chafe marks are a known cause of fires in older machines.
Product tip: poor cold starting is usually the glow plug: Ke-series glow plug (SKU-551216). If the engine won't stop or won't start due to the fuel shut-off valve: stop solenoid (SKU-98003) — suitable for Ke-13/14/18; for the Ke-16 verify the engine code first.
