Yanmar Ke-13 to Ke-18 operation & starting: how it works

Operation of the Yanmar Ke-13, Ke-14, Ke-16 and Ke-18 is largely the same across the entire series. In this guide: the correct starting procedure with preheating, warm-up times per outside temperature, shifting with the F8×R4 gearbox, and the rules for public roads according to the manual.

Suitable for the entire series: Yanmar Ke-13, Ke-14, Ke-16 and Ke-18 (all versions).

Starting the Yanmar Ke series: the procedure from the manual

Put the main gear lever and the PTO/mower lever in neutral — otherwise the starter safety switch will block the starter motor. Set the lift lever down or to neutral, pull the throttle lever fully open, and turn the key to "on": the preheat indicator light will come on. Wait until the light goes out (the tractor controls the preheat time itself), then turn the key further to "start" and release it immediately once the engine starts. If it doesn't start right away, wait a moment before trying again so the starter motor doesn't overheat.

Warming up the Yanmar Ke series: the colder it is, the longer it takes

After starting, let the engine warm up unloaded at around 1500 rpm — this is essential because the hydraulics and power steering run on transmission oil, which is thick when cold. The manual gives the following warm-up times:

Outside temperature Warm-up time
above 0 °C ±5 minutes
0 to −10 °C at least 10 minutes
−10 to −20 °C at least 20 minutes
below −20 °C at least 30 minutes

If the engine starts poorly in cold weather, the glow plugs or a weak battery are the first suspects — see the Yanmar Ke series troubleshooting guide.

Shifting and driving the Yanmar Ke series

The F8×R4 gearbox is operated with two levers: the main gear lever (1–4 and reverse) and the range lever (low/high). Shift with the clutch pedal fully depressed; the range lever may only be operated when the tractor is completely stationary. Never rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving — this causes the clutch to slip and wear out prematurely. Pull away gently: engaging abruptly with an implement in the ground is asking for damage. To stop: release the throttle, press the clutch and brake together, put the levers in neutral, and lock the parking brake lever.

The Yanmar Ke series on public roads

The manual is strict on three points. Always connect the left and right brake pedals with the coupling plate — separate pedals mean uneven braking in an emergency stop. On V-versions, turn off the dual-speed turn function (shift lever to "off", indicator light off) and on U-versions also disable the UFO automatic system. And never drive on the road with an attached implement wider than the tractor without the legally required equipment — check the current Dutch regulations for agricultural vehicles with the RDW.

Yanmar Ke series: keep an eye on the oil pressure and charge warning lights

If the oil pressure light comes on during work: stop immediately and check the oil level. The charge warning light indicates a loose or worn fan belt. The water temperature light means overheating: let the engine idle (do not switch it off immediately!), open the bonnet and let it cool down.

Product tip: slow cold start? Replace the glow plugs — the glow plug for the entire Ke series (SKU-551216) is a direct replacement for the original 129155-77800.
