Starting a Mitsubishi MT161, MT181, MT201, MT221, MT241 or MTZ is simple — if you know the correct sequence. Yet many "starting problems" with this series aren't caused by a defect, but by a skipped step: not fully depressing the clutch pedal or rushing the preheating. In this blog, the complete starting and operating procedure as prescribed by the factory.
Suitable for the entire series: Mitsubishi MT161, MT161S, MT181, MT201, MT221, MT241, MT241S, MTZ18, MTZ20, MTZ200, MTZ21 and MTZ23.
Put the gear lever and the PTO lever in neutral and fully depress the clutch pedal — there's a safety switch on the pedal: without the clutch pedal pressed in, the starter motor won't turn. Turn the key to the "運転/予熱" position (driving/preheating); the glow plug light on the dashboard will light up. Wait until the glow plug light goes out on its own — the glow time is regulated automatically — and only then turn the key to the start position. Release the key immediately once the engine fires; it will spring back automatically. Check that the oil pressure light and the charge light go out. If either one stays on: switch off immediately and find the cause.
The manual is clear about this: after starting, let the engine warm up for about five minutes at approximately 1,500 rpm — not just in winter, but always. Immediately applying full load to a cold engine significantly shortens its lifespan. Use the warm-up time to lower and raise the linkage a bit, so the hydraulic oil also comes up to temperature.
With repeated starting attempts in quick succession, the glow plug light may not light up, or only briefly — that's a protection circuit and therefore not a fault. If the engine starts poorly in frost, first check the glow plugs and the glow circuit (50A fuse) before pointing to the fuel pump. Important: never use starting fluid/starting spray with a working glow system — the combination can damage the engine. In persistent frost, also choose the right oil and diesel quality; see the fluids blog.
| Light / gauge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Glow plug light | Preheating active; goes out when the engine is ready to start |
| Oil pressure light | Must go out after starting. If it stays on during operation: switch off the engine, check oil level and filter |
| Charge light | Must go out after starting. If it stays on during operation: check the V-belt or alternator |
| Tachometer with hour meter | Keep track of working hours for the maintenance schedule |
| Diff lock indicator | Lights up as long as the differential lock is engaged |
If one rear wheel slips in soft ground, depress the diff lock pedal: both rear wheels will then turn at the same speed. Release the pedal and the lock disengages automatically. Never use the diff lock on the road or in a turn — with a locked differential, the tractor can't steer. The Dia Quick Turn function works exactly the other way around: when steering sharply at the headland, it automatically brakes the inner rear wheel for an extra tight turn. Handy when rotary tilling, but switch off the function during transport and on paved surfaces.
Never switch off the engine at full throttle. First let it idle for a few minutes (especially after heavy work), reduce the throttle lever, turn the key to stop and apply the parking brake. Always lower the implement to the ground before leaving the machine.
💡 Product tip: Does your machine start poorly in cold weather? Nine times out of ten it's the glow plugs. The glow plug for the S3L/S3L2 (SKU-55808) is available from stock — preferably replace all three at the same time.
