Kubota B1-14 through B1-17: winterizing and storage

If you want to get your Kubota B1-14, B1-15, B1-16 or B1-17 safely through the winter season, a few simple steps will prevent most storage damage. Frost, moisture and a draining battery are the biggest enemies of a mini tractor standing idle.

Suitable for the entire series: B1-14, B1-15, B1-16 and B1-17, including the Zen-noh rebadges ZB1-14 through ZB1-17.

The cooling system holds 3.4 liters of coolant. Make sure this is a proper antifreeze mixture and not tap water, otherwise the block or radiator will freeze and crack. Refresh the coolant every 2 years according to the schedule; preferably do this before winter, so you enter the cold season with fresh frost protection. While you're at it, check the radiator hoses for cracks and hardening — these should be replaced every 2 years according to the manual.

Kubota B1-14 through B1-17: fresh oil before storage

Used engine oil contains acids and moisture that attack the bearings during a long period of standstill. That's why it's better to change the engine oil (3.4 liters) before winter storage rather than after. After changing it, let the engine run briefly to warm up so the fresh oil reaches all parts. Also fill the tank completely with diesel: a full tank leaves less room for condensation and prevents rust and water in the fuel.

Kubota B1-14 through B1-17: battery and electrical

A battery that sits unused all winter will drain and can freeze. Remove it and store it in a frost-free place, or keep it charged with a trickle charger. Check the battery fluid level (roughly every 50 hours according to the schedule) and inspect the terminals for corrosion. This way you'll avoid the disappointment of a dead battery when starting up in spring.

Kubota B1-14 through B1-17: greasing and storing

Grease all grease nipples before putting the tractor away — grease displaces moisture and keeps the pivot points rust-free. Also grease the spline sections of the drive shaft and the clutch release hub. Clean the machine (especially chaff and dirt around the engine and radiator), store it in a dry place and, if desired, cover it with a breathable tarp. Don't let the tires sit flat in one spot for years, and don't tighten the parking brake too firmly during long-term storage, to prevent the brake shoes from rusting solid.

Kubota B1-14 through B1-17: storage checklist

Component Action before storage
Coolant check antifreeze, refresh if necessary (every 2 years)
Engine oil change (3.4 L) and warm up
Fuel fill tank (17 L) to prevent condensation
Battery store frost-free or use trickle charger
Lubrication grease all nipples and spline sections
Cleaning remove chaff and dirt, store dry
Storage tip: combine the winter service with fresh filters. The complete Kubota B1-14 through B1-17 maintenance kit (SKU-100118) contains the filters, oils and V-belt; also check your radiator hoses (SKU-33027) for wear.
