Buying a Hinomoto E1802 and E1804: what to look out for
- Head gasket and cylinder head: this is the well-known weak point of this engine. Ask about previous overheating, check for milky residue under the oil cap, and see if coolant is disappearing without a visible leak.
- Cooling system: check the radiator core for debris, the radiator cap, the V-belt, and whether the water pump is leaking.
- Front axle (E1804): Japanese imports sometimes have water in the front axle oil and a worn oil seal.
- Oil: the transmission oil and hydraulic filter on an import have usually never been replaced. Expect to perform an initial maintenance service.
2WD or 4WD? The E1804 features a driven front axle with its own oil: 1.5 L in the center housing and 0.4 L per final drive. The E1802 does not have this.
18 hp, is that correct? This is an indicative value. The power output is not listed in the workshop manual.
