Winterizing and storing your Hinomoto E1802 and E1804

Winterizing a Hinomoto E1802 or E1804 starts with the cooling system. A frozen block or cylinder head will crack, and on this engine, the cylinder head is already the weak point. Below is a checklist for both winter and spring.

Suitable for the entire series: Hinomoto E1802 (2WD) and E1804 (4WD) with Toyosha CS112 engine.

Hinomoto E1802 and E1804 coolant and frost

The cooling system of the E1802 and E1804 holds 4.0 L. Check before the first frost whether the coolant offers sufficient frost protection. If the protection is too low, the block or cylinder head can freeze and crack.

If the system is dirty or clogged, flush it before filling with new coolant. A clogged cooling system is one of the causes of overheating.

4.0 L, is 1 bottle enough? Yes. A 5 L bottle is enough for a complete fill.

Hinomoto E1802 and E1804 winter checklist

  1. Check the coolant for frost protection.
  2. Fill the fuel tank completely, which limits condensation.
  3. Drain water from the sediment bowl of the fuel filter.
  4. Change the engine oil (3.7 L with filter) and oil filter before storage.
  5. Charge the battery, connect a trickle charger, or disconnect the negative terminal.
  6. Grease all grease fittings.
  7. Check the tires.
  8. Blow out the radiator core clean.
  9. Check the V-belt. The deflection should be 8 to 10 mm.
  10. Test the glow plugs before winter: approx. 0.3 ohms each.

Why keep the tank full? A full tank limits condensation. Water from the tank shows up in the sediment bowl of the fuel filter.

Hinomoto E1802 and E1804 storage

Store the tractor in a dry place and cover the exhaust. After a long period of inactivity, the plungers of the injection pump may stick. The pump has its own sump with 200 ml of engine oil. Check that oil level before storage and again in the spring.

If you have an E1804, also check the front axle oil. In Japanese imports, there may be water present and the oil seal may be worn.

Hinomoto E1802 and E1804 spring checklist

  1. Check the oil levels: engine, transmission and hydraulics, and injection pump.
  2. Check the coolant level.
  3. Bleed the fuel system if necessary, for example after replacing a filter. Follow the steps in Hinomoto E1802 and E1804 starting, preheating and bleeding.
  4. Check the clutch (15 to 20 mm free play) and brakes (20 to 30 mm travel, equal on left and right).
  5. Check if the charge indicator light goes out. This happens at approx. 1000 rpm.
  6. Let the engine warm up and watch out for boiling over, bubbles in the radiator, and white smoke.

Working for 20 minutes and then boiling over? Boiling over after approx. 20 minutes of work is one of the signs of a blown head gasket. Stop immediately and read Hinomoto E1802 and E1804 breakdowns and common problems.

A general checklist for compact tractors can be found in Winterizing and storing your compact tractor.
