Troubleshooting Yanmar AF-15 to AF-18 problems: faults and solutions

When the Yanmar AF-15, AF-16, AF-17 or AF-18 won't start, smokes, overheats, or the lift refuses to work, the cause can usually be found with a systematic check. Below you'll find the fault tables from the original manual, supplemented with the issues that owners of this series encounter most often in practice.

Suitable for the entire series: Yanmar Forte AF-15, AF-16, AF-17 and AF-18, with the 3TNA72 (AF-15/16) and 3TNE74 engine (AF-17/18).

Yanmar AF won't start: starter motor doesn't turn

Check Solution
Clutch pedal fully depressed? The starter safety interlock blocks the starter motor until the pedal is fully depressed — the most commonly missed "fault"
Battery discharged or fluid too low? Top up with distilled water and charge fully
Battery terminals loose or corroded? Clean, tighten and grease
Main fusible link blown? Replace / have it checked
Safety switch or connector faulty? From practice: the clutch pedal switch connector often vibrates loose or corrodes after 30 years — check it and clean the contacts
Starter motor itself faulty? Have it tested; replace if necessary

Yanmar AF won't start: starter motor does turn

Check in this order: is there fuel in the tank, is the fuel tap set to "O" (open), and is there air in the system (bleed it: let the filter housing fill up, open the throttle, let the starter motor run)? Did the glow plug indicator light actually go out — and does it actually glow? Worn glow plugs are the classic culprit for poor cold starting: if you need to preheat two or three times, test them with a meter. In practice, there are also three persistent fuel issues with this generation: hardened fuel lines that invisibly draw in air, a clogged tank strainer that restricts the supply, and a leaking lift pump diaphragm — recognisable by a rising oil level that smells of diesel. In that case, replace the entire fuel path and check the engine oil. If the engine starts with starting fluid but not on its own, the injection pump or a pump component needs an overhaul — a job for the specialist. A sticking stop solenoid (which shuts off the fuel supply) can disrupt both starting and stalling; check whether it's receiving voltage.

Yanmar AF series engine runs unevenly or smokes

Symptom Cause Solution
Running unevenly Air or water in the fuel, clogged injector or fuel filter Bleed the system, drain water, clean or replace filter and injector
No power Clogged air filter, stuck injector, compression or valve clearance Check air filter; have compression/valves checked by a workshop
White smoke Too much engine oil or oil too thin (in frost, it could also be water vapour) Correct the oil level, fill with the correct viscosity
Black smoke Incomplete combustion / overload Reduce load; if smoking persists, have it checked
Overheating Coolant shortage, clogged radiator or dust screen, loose fan belt, oil level, overload Check level and belt (10–15 mm deflection), clean radiator and screen, replace thermostat or water pump
Oil pressure light comes on while driving Oil level too low, oil too thin, faulty pressure switch or oil pump Stop the engine immediately; correct level and oil, otherwise take it to a workshop
Charge light comes on while driving Faulty voltage regulator or loose fan belt Tension the belt; replace the regulator. From practice: the regulator often fails after an incorrect jump-start — never disconnect the battery while the engine is running

Yanmar AF series hydraulics: lift won't rise or won't lower

If the implement won't rise, first check the simplest thing: is the hydraulic stop/slow-return valve closed? Next: transmission oil level (the lift runs on this oil), a clogged line filter, and air in the suction line (retighten connections, check O-rings). Only after that do the pump, control valve and cylinder come into play — workshop work. If the implement won't lower with the lift switch, check whether the position lever is in the highest position; that overrides the switch. On OK-UFO versions that don't respond to the backup or lift switch: first check the backup switch and the connectors. Flashing lights on the UFO panel indicate a sensor fault — cleaning ground points and connectors often helps in practice, otherwise it's work for the specialist.

Yanmar AF series clutch, brakes and electrics

A slipping or poorly disengaging clutch and a brake that pulls to one side are usually a matter of pedal play: clutch 20–30 mm, brake 25–35 mm, and left/right exactly equal. A squeaking or slowly returning brake pedal points to a faulty return spring or dry pivot points — lubricate or replace. For electrical faults (lighting, indicators, horn), the fixed order is: bulb, fuse, connector, ground, switch. On these grey-import machines, the ground points are often the real culprit after thirty years.

Yanmar AF series: parts and grey imports

Good to know when working on it: engine parts for the 3TNA72 and 3TNE74 are readily available because these blocks were used in many other machines as well. Part numbers circulating in practice (such as for the stop solenoid) are for reference only — always verify against the engine code and serial number, as multiple versions exist within the series. Tractor-specific electronics (UFO controller, sensors) are scarce; handle them with care and keep high-pressure water away from them.

💡 Shop4trac tip: We stock the most in-demand repair parts for this series: glow plugs (SKU-551216), the injector nozzle (SKU-47020-s), the voltage regulator (SKU-128006), the thermostat 82 °C (SKU-45015) and the water pump (SKU-40090). If the starter motor turns slowly or the alternator isn't charging, we also supply the starter motor (SKU-129009) and the alternator (SKU-120006) — always check the engine code for these two. For the AF-17/18, there's also the stop solenoid (SKU-98003).
