Kubota GL21 maintenance schedule: what to replace when

Suitable for the entire Kubota GL series (Grandel): GL19, GL21, GL23, GL25, GL25K, GL26, GL27, GL29, GL32 and GL33 (also GL23DJ and GL27DJ, and the Hinomoto NX series). All intervals come from the original Kubota GL-series manual.

A Kubota GL21 that's maintained according to schedule will last tens of thousands of hours. In this maintenance schedule you'll see exactly what to do and when: from the first oil change after break-in to the two-yearly hose and coolant replacement. At the bottom you'll also find the key adjustment values for the clutch, brake, and V-belt.

Breaking in the Kubota GL21: the first 50 hours

With a new or overhauled engine, the first 50 hours are decisive. Avoid full throttle and heavy loads, let the engine warm up gently, and after those first 50 hours change the engine oil, engine oil filter, transmission oil, and hydraulic filter. At the same time, also check the clutch pedal free play right away. The manual explicitly marks this first service as a mandatory part of the break-in process.

The complete maintenance schedule

Component What Interval
Engine oil change 1st after 50 h, then every 100 h
Engine oil filter replace 1st after 50 h, then every 200 h
Transmission/hydraulic oil change 1st after 50 h, then every 300 h
Hydraulic oil filter replace 1st after 50 h, then every 200 h
Front axle oil bath (4WD) change every 300 h
Grease nipples / lubrication points grease every 50 h
Clutch pedal free play check/adjust 1st after 50 h, then every 150 h
Brake pedal free play check/adjust every 150 h
Toe-in check every 200 h
Battery / electrolyte and wiring check every 100–150 h
V-belt (fan belt) check tension every 50 h
Fuel and hydraulic lines check fastening every 50 h
Fuel filter element replace every 400 h
Air filter element clean / replace clean every 100 h, replace annually or after cleaning 6 times
Front axle bearing play adjust every 600 h (workshop)
Valve clearance check/adjust every 800 h (workshop)
Injectors (opening pressure) check every 800 h (workshop)
Cooling system, internal flush every 800 h
Coolant (with antifreeze) change every 2 years
Radiator hoses replace every 2 years
Fuel lines replace every 2 years
Power steering hose replace every 2 years

Kubota GL21 adjustment values from the manual

You'll need these values for almost every service:

Adjustment point Value How
V-belt deflection approx. 7 mm press with your finger in the middle of the belt; adjust by shifting the alternator
Clutch pedal free play 20–30 mm loosen the lock nut and adjust the adjuster bolt on the clutch rod
Brake pedal free play 15–20 mm via the turnbuckle; always adjust left and right equally
Tire pressure front 1.6 / rear 1.0 kgf/cm² front: 2.0 kgf/cm² when using a front loader

A slack V-belt causes overheating and poor battery charging; too much clutch play results in poor disengagement, while too little causes a slipping clutch that wears out quickly. Unevenly adjusted brake pedals make the tractor pull to one side when braking – especially important since the pedals must be locked together for road transport.

In practice: plan it smartly

Most owners don't rack up hundreds of hours per year. So besides the hour meter, keep an eye on the calendar too: change the engine oil and clean the air filter at least once a year, even if you haven't reached 100 hours. Replace the coolant, hoses, and fuel lines every two years – rubber ages even when standing still. Combine the work into two fixed services: the small service (engine oil, oil filter, cleaning the air filter, checking the V-belt and pedals, greasing) and the major service (on top of that, transmission oil, hydraulic filter, front axle oil, and fuel filter). You can read which oil goes where in the blog about engine oil and fluids.

💡 Shop4trac tip: Get the filter service done right in one go with the Filter set Kubota GL19 – GL32 (SKU-10037) – including the often-forgotten copper sump plug gasket. During the major service, also replace the hydraulic filter (SKU-250006) and keep a V-belt (SKU-124018) in stock.
