Suitable for the entire Kubota GL series (Grandel): GL19, GL21, GL23, GL25, GL25K, GL26, GL27, GL29, GL32 and GL33 (also GL23DJ and GL27DJ, and the Hinomoto NX series). All capacities are taken from the original Kubota manual.
Which engine oil does the Kubota GL21 need , and how much goes into the transmission and front axle? Below you'll find all fluids, quantities and specifications from the factory manual, translated into products you can simply buy today.

The manual specifies Kubota diesel oil D30 or D10W30, with quality grade API CC or CD; for winter, Kubota explicitly recommends the thinner D10W30. Translated to today's product range: a mineral or semi-synthetic diesel engine oil 10W-30 or 15W-40 with API CD or higher is exactly what these engines need. Modern 15W40 oil with API SG/CD specification comfortably meets this requirement and is the practical standard choice for these engines in our climate. Including the filter, it takes 5.7 litres; always check the level with the dipstick on level ground.
On the GL series, the transmission, rear axle and hydraulics share a single oil system. Kubota specifies UDT or M80B here: a universal tractor transmission oil (UTTO). For cold regions and for all U-shift versions, the manual explicitly recommends UDT – the U-shift shifts noticeably smoother with it. So use a modern UTTO oil and don't mix oil types. The GL21 takes 35 litres; replace the corresponding hydraulic filter every 200 hours.
Fill the oil bath of the driven front axle with the same UDT/M80B oil (GL21: 3.2 litres, change every 300 hours). Only versions without power steering additionally have 0.2 litres of oil in the steering box. All pivot points of pedals and levers get a drop of oil, the grease nipples of the steering knuckles and lifting mechanism get chassis grease every 50 hours, and the battery terminals get a thin layer of acid-free grease to prevent corrosion.
The GL21 holds 6 litres of coolant. Use a mixture of water and ethylene glycol antifreeze and replace it every two years; flush the system every 800 hours. The manual warns that the temperature gauge enters the red zone at around 125°C – if this happens, immediately check the level, the V-belt and the radiator screen. Never keep driving with an overheated engine.
Many GL's now have thousands of hours on the clock. If you notice increasing oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, or low oil pressure when the engine is warm, this doesn't necessarily mean an overhaul is needed. An oil additive that stabilises viscosity can give such an engine extra years of life, always in combination with fresh oil and a new filter.
