Buying a Mitsubishi K4 series: what to look for with K4E, K4F and K4M

Mitsubishi K4: what kind of engine is it?

The Mitsubishi K4 is the four-cylinder member of Mitsubishi's water-cooled K-series diesel engines: compact, robust blocks found in compact tractors, mini excavators, wheel loaders, generators and marine applications. Within the K4 family you'll come across codes such as K4A, K4B, K4C, K4D, K4E, K4F, K4G, K4M and K4N — do you recognise your code here? Then you're in the right place. The K-series is a family of four-stroke, water-cooled, vertical diesel engines. The number indicates the cylinder count: K2 is two-cylinder, K3 three-cylinder, and the K4 is the four-cylinder. Within the K4 there are several versions that mainly differ in bore, displacement and power output. In practice, a K4 delivers roughly 20 to 45 hp, depending on the version and speed.

You'll find the K4 in, among others, Mitsubishi MT tractors (MT21 through MT33), Suzue rebadges, Iseki tractors (TU and TX series), Bolens, mini excavators (Hanix, Terex-Schaeff, Pel Job, Zeppelin), Weidemann wheel loaders, marine blocks (Vetus M4.14, Solé, Sabb) and countless generator sets. That widespread use is good news for parts: the block is popular and common wear parts are readily in stock.

Mitsubishi K4E, K4F and K4M: the differences at a glance

The three four-cylinder K4 versions documented in the workshop manual share the same basic design (four-stroke, water-cooled, direct injection, compression ratio 18, firing order 1‑3‑4‑2), but differ in the block itself. This is what you need to watch for, since bore and displacement determine which pistons, head gasket and overhaul kit you'll need.

The related codes: the smaller K4A/K4B/K4C have a smaller bore, the K4E (76 mm, 1415 cc) and K4F (78 mm, 1490 cc) form the mid-range, and the large K4D (87 mm), K4M (84 × 90 mm, 1995 cc) and K4N are the heavyweights at nearly 2 litres. The larger blocks have their own pistons, their own bearing sizes (thicker crankshaft journals), a heavier-duty head gasket, and even different torque values. Parts are therefore not simply interchangeable between versions — always check the bore or engine number.

Also pay attention to the K4E and K4F between themselves: although they share the same stroke (78 mm), the bore differs by 2 mm. A K4E piston is not a K4F piston. Not sure? Measure your old piston or head gasket, or send us a photo of the ID plate.

Mitsubishi K4: direct or indirect injection? This is the most important checkpoint

This is where things most often go wrong when ordering parts. The same engine code — K4E, for example — actually exists in two versions:

  • Direct injection (DI): fuel is injected straight into a combustion bowl in the piston crown. Recognisable by a multi-hole nozzle (nozzle type DLL‑P, for example DLLA155P15) and pistons with a distinct bowl. Compression ratio 18.
  • Indirect injection (IDI): fuel first enters a prechamber/swirl chamber. Recognisable by a throttle nozzle and a different piston crown. This version has a higher compression ratio and generally starts a bit more easily when cold, but is slightly less fuel-efficient.

Why does this matter? Because the pistons, injector nozzles and therefore the overhaul kit differ, while the rest of the engine is largely the same. If you order a DI piston for an IDI block (or vice versa), the compression and combustion will no longer be correct. So always determine first which version you have:

  • Unscrew an injector nozzle and check the type (multi-hole = direct, throttle/pintle = indirect).
  • Look at the piston crown once the head is removed: a deep combustion bowl indicates direct injection.
  • Check the ID plate and the complete engine number, and keep it handy when ordering parts.

What should you check when buying a K4-powered machine?

With regular maintenance a K4 can last tens of thousands of hours, but a neglected one can prove costly. Before buying, go through these points:

  • Compression. According to factory data, a healthy K4 achieves at least around 32 kg/cm² (±455 psi) at 280 rpm on the starter motor. Large differences between cylinders indicate worn piston rings, valve problems, or a leaking head gasket.
  • Cold start and exhaust smoke. Some blue or white smoke right after a cold start is normal and clears quickly. Persistent blue smoke (oil), black smoke under load (combustion/injection) or white smoke at operating temperature (coolant or injection) deserve attention.
  • Oil leaks and blow-by. Check the valve cover breather: heavy vapour/pressure from the filler opening indicates piston and cylinder wear.
  • Oil pressure and charge warning lights. These should switch off once the engine is running. If the oil pressure light stays on, stop immediately.
  • Cooling system. Brown or oily coolant, a clogged radiator, or hardened hoses indicate deferred maintenance and a risk of overheating.
  • Bore and engine number. Note the exact version (K4A through K4N, DI or IDI). This tells you immediately whether parts are available and affordable — and with this block, they almost always are.

Strengths and weaknesses, honestly

The K4 owes its reputation to a simple, mechanical design: a Bosch M-type injection pump with centrifugal governor, a trochoid oil pump, and a fully cast-iron lower block. Little electronics, plenty of simplicity — ideal for those who like to work on their own equipment. The wide availability of parts and broad application make it a rewarding block to overhaul rather than replace.

To be fair, it is an old design. Cold starting requires working glow plugs and a healthy battery, the engine produces that typical diesel clatter, and under heavy load some soot may be emitted. Neglected cooling system maintenance is the biggest culprit behind problems. However, anyone who keeps valve clearance, filters, coolant and injection in good order will have an exceptionally reliable workhorse.
