A tractor that sits idle for months deteriorates faster than one that runs regularly — unless you store it properly. Here's how to safely put away the Yanmar EG220 through EG230 for winter or an extended period of inactivity, according to the manual.
Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cabin), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, including EG227J and EG230J) versions.
Before putting it away: remove dirt, grass and dust (especially from the radiator screen and cooling fins), check for leaks, and grease all lubrication points after wet work. Park on a flat, solid surface, put the levers in neutral, engage the parking brake and remove the key. Only put a cover on once the engine and exhaust have cooled down — otherwise there's a fire risk.
The EG series uses a maintenance-free, sealed battery (type 80D26R) without filler caps. Check the charge level with the built-in hydrometer: green = fine, black = needs charging, clear = battery needs replacing. During extended storage, keeping the battery fully charged (topping it up occasionally) or disconnecting it prevents deep discharge.
Regardless of the operating hours, replace the fuel lines and the rubber (power steering) hoses every 2 years. Aged rubber becomes hard and can start leaking or cracking — especially after a period of inactivity. When putting the tractor back into use, also check the V-belt tension and drain the water separator.
💡 Product tip: putting the EG into storage? Do the fresh oil change right away with a new engine oil filter and engine oil. That way you'll be ready to go come spring.
