Yanmar EG220–EG230 storage and seasonal maintenance

A tractor that sits idle for months deteriorates faster than one that runs regularly — unless you store it properly. Here's how to safely put away the Yanmar EG220 through EG230 for winter or an extended period of inactivity, according to the manual.

Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cabin), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, including EG227J and EG230J) versions.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 after every job

Before putting it away: remove dirt, grass and dust (especially from the radiator screen and cooling fins), check for leaks, and grease all lubrication points after wet work. Park on a flat, solid surface, put the levers in neutral, engage the parking brake and remove the key. Only put a cover on once the engine and exhaust have cooled down — otherwise there's a fire risk.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 winter storage (extended periods of inactivity)

  1. Clean the entire tractor and let it dry; treat bare metal parts with a thin layer of oil if needed to prevent rust.
  2. Change the engine oil and filter — old oil contains acids that cause damage during storage.
  3. Fill the fuel tank completely to prevent condensation (and thus water) from forming in the tank.
  4. Check the antifreeze. Permanent antifreeze protects year-round; check the concentration if the fluid is old.
  5. Grease all lubrication points and preferably relieve pressure on the tires (jack up or check tire pressure).
  6. Store in a dry, ventilated place, out of direct sunlight, with the key kept in a safe place.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 battery during storage

The EG series uses a maintenance-free, sealed battery (type 80D26R) without filler caps. Check the charge level with the built-in hydrometer: green = fine, black = needs charging, clear = battery needs replacing. During extended storage, keeping the battery fully charged (topping it up occasionally) or disconnecting it prevents deep discharge.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 replace on time

Regardless of the operating hours, replace the fuel lines and the rubber (power steering) hoses every 2 years. Aged rubber becomes hard and can start leaking or cracking — especially after a period of inactivity. When putting the tractor back into use, also check the V-belt tension and drain the water separator.

💡 Product tip: putting the EG into storage? Do the fresh oil change right away with a new engine oil filter and engine oil. That way you'll be ready to go come spring.
