Yanmar EG220–EG230 hydraulics, PTO and implements

For its class, the Yanmar EG series has a surprisingly smart lift system: position and automatic control, adjustable lowering speed, automatic lift in reverse and on turns, and auto tilling-depth control. Below we explain how to get the most out of the hydraulics, PTO and implements of the Yanmar EG220 through EG230 for optimal use.

Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cab), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, e.g. EG227J and EG230J) variants.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 lift system and hydraulics

The three-point hitch (special 3-point) lifts up to 11.7 kN (1,200 kgf) and works with both position and automatic control. You raise and lower the implement using the implement lift switch and the lift lever. Key settings:

  • Lowering speed — adjusted with the oil-stop/slow-return valve: turning left lowers the implement faster, turning right slows it down, and turning fully clockwise shuts off the oil so the implement no longer lowers (handy for transport).
  • Lift limit — use the height-adjustment dial to limit the maximum lift height, so the implement doesn't hit the tractor or cab.
  • Reverse lift (back-up) — when you put the reverser into reverse, the implement automatically lifts (with a buzzer); handy when turning at the headland.
  • Turn lift — once you steer beyond a certain angle, the implement lifts automatically.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 PTO

The PTO has three speeds plus reverse:

Model PTO speeds
EG220 / EG222 / EG224 543 / 776 / 1,170 rpm (+ 673 rpm reverse)
EG227 / EG230 549 / 786 / 1,184 rpm (+ 681 rpm reverse)

Choose the PTO speed specified for the implement. Never run an implement designed for a low PTO speed at a high speed — this will damage the implement.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 tilling depth (auto tilling-depth control)

With the auto tilling-depth control function, the tractor automatically keeps the tilling depth constant. Set the desired depth with the tilling-depth dial:

Depth setting dial Application
1 – 2 border tilling / shallow work
2 – 3 general tilling
3 and higher deep tilling

What can you do with 20 to 30 hp?

Important to know: engine power (20–30 hp) is not the same as drawbar pull. A large part is transmitted via the PTO to powered implements. Realistically, with the EG series you can:

  • Till with a rotary tiller of 130 to 170 cm working width (depending on model and soil type).
  • Plough with a light 1-furrow plough; on heavier soil, the EG227/EG230 will get you further.
  • Cultivate / border till for seedbed preparation.
  • Tow a tipping trailer or handle transport work (always use a drawbar).
  • Front loader work — especially with the heavier models; always balance with a front weight or rear weight.

For heavy or powered work, choose a low gear with the auxiliary transmission in the creep or low setting; for transport and road work, use the high setting instead. The bias steering function (speeding up the front axle in turns) makes tight turning at the headland much easier — but never use it on the road or on slopes.

💡 Product tip: Is your lift sinking slowly or does the hydraulics respond sluggishly? First check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and the filter. Not sure if a hydraulic part will fit? Send us your engine number.
