Yanmar EG220–EG230 faults: causes and solutions

Isn't your Yanmar EG running as it should? This troubleshooting guide follows the diagnostic table from the factory manual and supplements it with well-known practical experience. Work through the points from top to bottom before calling a mechanic.

Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cab), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, incl. EG227J and EG230J) versions.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 warning lights

Light Meaning / action
Engine oil pressure light stays on oil level too low or oil too thin — stop immediately, check level and top up
Charge light stays on while driving V-belt loose/broken or charging fault — check belt tension
Water temperature in red zone overheating — stop, let idle to cool down, find the cause
Fault light (J-change) flashing drive fault; turn the key OFF once and restart, if it persists: have it checked

Yanmar EG220–EG230 starting problems

Symptom Probable cause Solution
Starter motor doesn't turn levers not in neutral (reverser/auxiliary gear/PTO) put everything in N; otherwise the starter safety switch blocks it
Starter motor doesn't turn battery terminals loose or corroded, or blown (slow-blow) fuse clean and tighten terminals; check/replace fuse
Starter motor turns, engine doesn't start no fuel, fuel tap OFF, or air in the system refuel, turn tap to ON, bleed the fuel system
Engine runs irregularly water in the fuel or clogged water separator drain water, refuel with fresh diesel, clean water separator

Yanmar EG220–EG230 overheating and power loss

Symptom Probable cause Solution
Engine overheats coolant level too low or radiator screen clogged top up coolant; clean screen and cooling fins
Engine overheats V-belt loose or broken tension or replace belt
Low power air filter clogged clean or replace air filter element
Low power overload select a lower gear, reduce load

Yanmar EG220–EG230 lift and hydraulics

Symptom Probable cause Solution
Implement doesn't lift oil stop/slow-return valve closed, oil level too low or oil filter clogged open valve, top up transmission oil, replace filter
Implement doesn't lower oil stop/slow-return valve closed or auto-cable out of adjustment open valve, adjust auto-cable
Reverse lift doesn't work back-up button switched off switch on the back-up button

Yanmar EG220–EG230 cooling: water pump, thermostat and head gasket

Cooling complaints are the most frequently reported issue with these engines. If your EG runs hot or leaks coolant, check these three points:

  • Water pump. Coolant stains under the tractor, a rattling/screeching noise from the front, or a fluctuating temperature gauge indicate a worn water pump bearing or seal — often accelerated by a V-belt that's too tight or misaligned. Note the engine block: the EG220/222/224 (3TNV82A) and the EG227/230 (3TNV88) each have their own water pump.
  • Thermostat. If the engine stays cold (thermostat stuck open) or runs hot while the coolant and belt are fine (thermostat stuck closed), the thermostat is the likely culprit. Replacement is cheap and quick.
  • Head gasket. Bubbles in the expansion tank, a dark/oily film on the coolant, or persistent white/blue smoke indicate a head gasket leaking into the cooling system. Order the head gasket by engine block — those for the 3TNV82A and the 3TNV88 are not interchangeable.

Known practical issues

From practice and owners' experiences, these points come up frequently:

  • Doesn't turn over due to the starter safety switch. By far the most reported "fault" is simply that the reverser, auxiliary gear or PTO isn't exactly in neutral — move the levers slightly and try again.
  • Poor starting in winter. Often the glow plugs/thermostart or a weak battery; wait for the glow plug light to go out and check the battery.
  • Water in the fuel. The red float ring in the water separator rising means: drain it. Draining regularly prevents irregular running.
  • Cooling system. A leaking water pump and a stuck thermostat are the most replaced cooling parts on these engines; when overheating occurs, always check the belt tension and the cooling fins/radiator screen first.
  • UFO leveling (U version) doesn't work. Often a ground/earthing issue: the control box is poorly grounded due to rust, or one of the two control valves under the seat is malfunctioning. Check the grounding and the control box's plug connections first before working on the valves.
  • J-change responds slowly in cold weather. Wait for the oil pressure light to go out and warm up longer before shifting.

Part numbers from practice are for reference only — always verify against your serial or engine number if in doubt, as the EG series has multiple versions.

💡 Product tip: cooling problem? Choose the water pump for your engine block: water pump 3TNV82 (EG220/222/224) or water pump 3TNV88 (EG227/230), possibly with a new thermostat. Head gasket leaking? For the EG227/230 there's a head gasket 3TNV88, for the EG220–224 the gasket set 3TNV82. Starting poorly? Replace the glow plug or the air filter. If the cause is a loose or broken cooling fan belt, the V-belt A39 is the right replacement.
