Yanmar EG220–EG230 Operation: Starting, Preheating and Driving

The Yanmar EG series starts with a modern thermostart glow system and features an informative instrument panel. Below is the correct starting, preheating and driving procedure for the Yanmar EG220 through EG230 from the factory manual.

Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cabin), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, incl. EG227J and EG230J) variants.

Starting the Yanmar EG220–EG230

  1. Water separator valve open. Turn the fuel valve/water separator to open.
  2. Parking brake on and take a seat.
  3. Everything in neutral. Set the main/auxiliary gear, the reverser and the PTO lever to N (neutral). Without this, the start safety switch will engage and the starter motor will not turn.
  4. Implement lowered. Set the implement lift to its lowest position.
  5. Ignition on. Turn the key to ON — the preheat indicator light (thermostart) will light up.
  6. Starting. Once the preheat indicator light goes out, turn the key to START. Never run the starter motor for longer than 10 seconds at a time.
  7. Warming up. After starting, let the engine warm up for about 5 minutes at approx. 1,500 rpm before applying load.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 preheating times

The thermostart preheat indicator light stays on longer the colder it is. Always wait until it goes out:

Coolant temperature Preheat time
above 5 °C approx. 1 second
5 °C to −20 °C 3 – 5 seconds
below −20 °C 23 – 25 seconds

In low temperatures, warm up longer before starting work:

Outside temperature Warm-up time
0 °C to −10 °C at least 10 minutes
−10 °C to −20 °C at least 20 minutes
below −20 °C at least 30 minutes

The J-change (X variant) is hydraulically driven: wait to shift until the engine oil pressure light has gone out, and warm up extra long in cold weather — otherwise the drive will respond sluggishly.

Yanmar EG220–EG230 dashboard indicator lights

The instrument panel displays, among others, these indicator lights:

  • Engine oil pressure — must go out after starting; if it stays on, stop immediately and check the oil level.
  • Charge light — goes out once the alternator is charging; keep the engine speed above approx. 1,500 rpm to charge.
  • Water temperature — needle in the red zone means overheating; stop and let it cool down.
  • Neutral (N) — lights up when the levers are in neutral.
  • Fault light (トラブル, J-change only) — flashes in case of a drive fault (e.g. 11 flashes); if it stays on, have it inspected.
  • Low-speed, corner lift, reverse lift, UFO level and UFO tilt indicator lights — indicate the status of the drive and lift automatics.

Driving and stopping the Yanmar EG220–EG230

Pull away only with smooth clutch operation and the throttle around 1,500 rpm; select the gear that suits the job. To stop: throttle to idle, key to OFF, check that all levers are in N, and remove the key. Never leave the key in the ACC position — this will drain the battery.

💡 Product tip: does your EG start poorly in cold weather? It's often the preheating system. A new glow plug or a fresh starter motor usually resolves persistent slow starting.
