The Yanmar EG series starts with a modern thermostart glow system and features an informative instrument panel. Below is the correct starting, preheating and driving procedure for the Yanmar EG220 through EG230 from the factory manual.
Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cabin), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, incl. EG227J and EG230J) variants.
The thermostart preheat indicator light stays on longer the colder it is. Always wait until it goes out:
| Coolant temperature | Preheat time |
|---|---|
| above 5 °C | approx. 1 second |
| 5 °C to −20 °C | 3 – 5 seconds |
| below −20 °C | 23 – 25 seconds |
In low temperatures, warm up longer before starting work:
| Outside temperature | Warm-up time |
|---|---|
| 0 °C to −10 °C | at least 10 minutes |
| −10 °C to −20 °C | at least 20 minutes |
| below −20 °C | at least 30 minutes |
The J-change (X variant) is hydraulically driven: wait to shift until the engine oil pressure light has gone out, and warm up extra long in cold weather — otherwise the drive will respond sluggishly.
The instrument panel displays, among others, these indicator lights:
Pull away only with smooth clutch operation and the throttle around 1,500 rpm; select the gear that suits the job. To stop: throttle to idle, key to OFF, check that all levers are in N, and remove the key. Never leave the key in the ACC position — this will drain the battery.
💡 Product tip: does your EG start poorly in cold weather? It's often the preheating system. A new glow plug or a fresh starter motor usually resolves persistent slow starting.
