Iseki TM15 & TM17 troubleshooting

Iseki TM15 & TM17 troubleshooting: from starting problems to overheating

Does your Iseki TM15 or TM17 not start, run irregularly, or overheat? The original factory manual contains extensive troubleshooting tables, and practical owner experience adds a few more known issues. In this blog, we list symptoms, causes, and solutions so you can search with purpose instead of guessing.

Suitable for the entire series: Iseki TM15 and TM17, all versions.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: starter does not turn

Possible cause Solution
Clutch pedal not depressed The starter safety switch blocks the starter. Fully depress the pedal — this is by far the most common "fault".
Safety switch defective Test the switch at the clutch pedal and replace if necessary.
Battery dead Charge or replace the battery (12V 28Ah).
Battery terminals or earth cables loose/corroded Clean the connections, tighten and grease them. A classic issue on older grey-import machines.
Ignition switch or starter motor defective Test and repair or replace.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: starter turns, engine does not start

Possible cause Solution
Air in the fuel system Bleed the system via the bleed screw until bubble-free diesel comes out.
Fuel filter clogged Clean the filter bowl, replace the element.
No fuel supply Open the fuel tap, check the tank content; watch for paraffin waxing in frost (use winter diesel).
Glow plugs worn (cold start) Test the glow plugs (measure resistance or check current draw) and replace. From practical experience: a TM that starts fine warm but not cold almost always has a glow plug or fuel issue.
Starter turns too slowly Weak battery, poor earth connection, or engine oil too thick. In practice, a heavy-turning engine can also be caused by a seized thrust bearing — recognizable by noise when the clutch is engaged.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: engine runs irregularly or stalls

According to the manual, irregular running is almost always caused by fuel-related issues: air in the system, a clogged fuel filter, a blocked injector nozzle, or leakage in the lines. Bleed the system first, then replace the filter and check the lines and copper sealing rings. If the engine suddenly stalls during work, the manual offers a handy quick test: pull the V-belt — if you can turn the crankshaft this way, it's usually a fuel shortage or injector issue and not a seizure. If the engine keeps stalling at idle, this points to the fuel pump, valve clearance, or injectors: a job for the workshop.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: overheating

Possible cause Solution
Coolant level too low Top up (system capacity 5 litres) and check for leaks.
V-belt loose or damaged Adjust tension to 8–10 mm deflection or replace the belt.
Radiator dirty Blow out the fins — the radiator clogs quickly during milling work.
Engine oil level too low Check the level and top up.
Thermostat stays closed Test the thermostat (opens at 82°C) in a pan of hot water and replace if necessary.
Water pump leaking or not pumping Leakage at the inspection hole under the pump = water pump (SKU-320) replace — supplied including gasket.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: white or black smoke

White smoke according to the manual, means: clogged air filter (clean or replace the element), too much engine oil (correct the level), or insufficient fuel supply (workshop job). Black smoke indicates incorrect or contaminated fuel, excessive fuel supply, or too low injector pressure — the injectors should open at 150–160 bar. Power loss without obvious smoke is often caused by contaminated or carbonised injectors, incorrect valve clearance, or a clogged air filter.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: compression loss, oil consumption, and head gasket

If, after all the above, the engine still pulls poorly, uses a lot of oil, or smokes blue/white, the problem lies deeper: compression loss. The manual lists leakage along the valve seats, incorrect valve clearance, and wear in the block as causes. A compression test per cylinder quickly provides clarity. In practice, these are the two main suspects for the E393 (TM15) and E3100 (TM17):

Symptom Likely cause & solution
High oil consumption, blue smoke, low compression on multiple cylinders Worn piston rings. Replacement is possible without a full engine overhaul; new piston rings for the E393/E3100 (SKU-95066) are available per cylinder.
Rust-brown or bubbling coolant, coolant loss without visible leak, white smoke when engine is warm Blown head gasket: combustion gases pressurise the cooling system. Skim the head and fit a new head gasket E393/E3100 (SKU-104) .
Oil leak between engine and clutch housing Worn rear crankshaft seal — a well-known age-related issue with these engines. Replace it right away while the clutch is out anyway.

When ordering engine parts, note: the TM15 has the E393 (928cc) and the TM17 has the E3100 (1,006cc). Always check the engine number on the block before ordering gaskets or piston rings.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: electrical faults

For electrical issues, first check the fuses: the TM has plug-in fuses of 5, 10, and 15A plus a slow-blow main fuse. If the battery isn't charging (charge indicator lamp is on), check the V-belt, battery terminals, alternator, and voltage regulator in turn. Note: a defective fuel pump can also present as a "starting problem" while the actual cause is simply a blown fuse.

Iseki TM15 & TM17: lift or hydraulics not working

A slow or non-functioning rear lift usually has a simple cause on the TM series: too little transmission oil, a contaminated suction filter, or cold, thick oil. If the lift still doesn't work properly when warm and with clean filters, read our detailed article on a defective hydraulic pump or malfunctioning rear lift on Iseki and Kubota — it explains step by step how to test the pump.

Part numbers from the manual are for reference; always verify the model and engine number on the identification plate when ordering — grey-import machines have version differences.

💡 Shop4trac tip: We stock the most requested fault-related parts for the TM15/TM17: glow plugs (SKU-55001), fuel filter (SKU-150002), injector nozzles (SKU-47006-s) or the complete injector (SKU-47037-s), the water pump (SKU-320), the starter motor (SKU-129023), and for engine overhaul the piston rings (SKU-95066) and head gasket (SKU-104).
