The hydraulics and PTO of the Iseki TM15 and TM17 turn them into true workhorses in a compact package. In this blog we explain how the lift system and PTO work, which implements are realistic for 13–15 hp on the PTO, and what to pay attention to when hitching and unhitching — based on the original factory manual.
Suitable for the entire series: Iseki TM15 and TM17, all versions.
The lift works with position control: the position of the lift lever corresponds to a fixed height of the lift arms. Set the lever halfway, and the implement stays suspended at half height — handy for keeping a tiller at a constant depth. There's also a lowering speed knob on the system: this controls how fast the implement descends, and turning it fully closed locks the hydraulics. This lock must be used during road transport and during maintenance under a raised implement.
The hydraulic pump draws its oil from the transmission housing (13.5–14 liters of shared oil). If the lift is slow or jerky, first check the oil level and the suction filter — and keep in mind that a cold machine always lifts more slowly, especially in winter.
| PTO position | Speed (at 2500 engine rpm) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 450 rpm | Heavy tilling work, implements for 540 standard (driven a bit more gently) |
| 2 | 696 rpm | Tilling lighter soil, mowing |
| 3 | 1140 rpm | Fast-spinning implements |
| Reverse | 707 rpm (reverse) | Freeing a jammed tiller |
The PTO shaft is 35 mm with 6 splines. The PTO is driven via the main clutch: pressing the clutch pedal therefore also stops the PTO. Always engage the PTO at low engine speed and set it to neutral before starting.
The standard tiller (ARM12 on the TM15, 120 cm; ARM13 on the TM17, 130 cm) is mounted using a 2P quick-hitch system. The manual pays a lot of attention to this: hitch on level ground, keep everyone away from between the tractor and the implement, and secure all pins. With PTO speeds of 156/242/396 rpm and a working depth of up to about 16 cm, you can loosen up a fixed vegetable garden or riding arena in two or three passes. If the tiller gets clogged with roots or rope, use the reverse position (246 rpm in reverse) to free it up — never reach near moving parts with your hands.
With 9.8 kW (TM15) to 10.8 kW (TM17) at the PTO, this is the realistic range of implements:
| Implement | Realistic? |
|---|---|
| Rotary tiller 120–130 cm | Yes — this is what the machine was built for |
| Flail/rotary mower up to approx. 1.2 m | Yes, a great combination |
| Snow blade / sweeper | Yes |
| Small tipping trailer on the fixed towbar | Yes, watch the low unladen weight (±580 kg) when braking on slopes |
| Wood chipper | Only light models for thin pruning wood |
| Heavy tedder, baler, large rotary mower | No — PTO power is too limited for this |
Rule of thumb: allow roughly 10 hp at the PTO per meter of working width of a driven implement. With 13–15 hp, you're fine up to about 1.2–1.3 meters — exactly the width of the supplied tillers.
