Replacement interval
Replace the oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter at the same time as every engine oil change, or at least once per season under normal use. If you work a lot in dusty conditions (mowing, loader work, unpaved surfaces), check the air filter more frequently: a clogged air filter costs power and noticeably increases fuel consumption. The hydraulic filter needs to be replaced less often, but check it during every major service or when the lift mechanism responds more slowly than normal.
Why a saturated filter is a problem
A clogging fuel filter eventually lets through insufficient diesel, resulting in an irregularly running engine, power loss under load, or difficulty starting. A saturated oil filter can open the bypass during cold starts (thick oil), causing unfiltered oil to circulate through the engine — leading to accelerated wear in the long run. A dirty air filter causes a mixture that's too rich and is one of the most common causes of black smoke in this engine family (see also the troubleshooting blog in this series).
Replacing a filter: practical tips
Unscrew the oil filter with a filter wrench (often stuck due to heat expansion) and lightly grease the sealing ring of the new filter with fresh engine oil before tightening it by hand. For the fuel filter: always bleed the fuel system after installation, otherwise the engine won't start or will run irregularly due to air in the line. The air filter can be carefully tapped out periodically, but replace the element according to the interval regardless — blowing it out with compressed air damages the paper filter medium.
