The Yanmar EG series (EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230) is a modern generation of compact diesel tractors: solid three-cylinder diesels, hydrostatic options and surprisingly sophisticated electronics for this class. If you're looking for a reliable 20 to 30 hp tractor for garden, yard, orchard or hobby farm, this buying guide is your starting point.
Suitable for the entire series: EG220, EG222, EG224, EG227 and EG230 — including the Q (cab), U (Nicety UFO), X (J-change) and J (high speed, e.g. EG227J and EG230J) versions.
All models are 4WD compact tractors with full hydraulic power steering, wet disc brakes and a three-point hitch that lifts up to 1,200 kgf. The main differences lie in power, weight and track width. Rule of thumb: the heavier the ground work (plowing, deep tilling, heavy front loader), the more you should look toward the EG227/EG230.
| Model | Engine | Power | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| EG220 | 3TNV82A | 20 hp | garden, light ground work, tilling up to approx. 150 cm |
| EG222 | 3TNV82A | 22 hp | yard, orchard, general tilling work |
| EG224 | 3TNV82A | 24 hp | versatile; also available with J-change (HST) |
| EG227 | 3TNV88 | 27 hp | heavier ground work, plowing, front loader |
| EG230 | 3TNV88 | 30 hp | the flagship model; heavy-duty work and pulling power |
The series runs on two different Yanmar engines, and this difference is crucial when ordering engine parts:
Because the bore differs, the head gasket and pistons are not interchangeable between the two groups. The oil filter and air filter, on the other hand, are the same across the entire series. So always note the engine number on a used EG — this prevents ordering the wrong part. More on this in our filter guide and the oil and fluids overview.
The EG series was supplied in several versions. The letter code after (or with) the model tells you what the tractor can do:
| Code | Version | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Q | Cab | enclosed safety cab with wipers, work light and (optional) air conditioning |
| U | Nicety UFO | automatic leveling control: keeps the implement level, even when the tractor is on a slope |
| X | J-change | electronically controlled HST with reverser (continuously variable, 30 forward / 30 reverse) |
| J | High speed | drives up to approx. 19 km/h; a full driving licence is required for public roads (e.g. EG227J, EG230J) |
As standard, the models already feature auto-tilling (automatic tilling depth) and UFO leveling on board — quite luxurious for this class. A regular (standard) EG has a 12-speed gearbox with synchro main shift; the X/J-change is continuously variable hydrostatic.
Based on practical experience and feedback from owners, the same points keep coming up:
Also watch out for naming confusion: the EG series was also sold domestically as the EF series (EF220/EF222/EF224/EF227/EF230). Mechanically these are the same engine blocks, so many parts are interchangeable — but always verify by engine number.
💡 Product tip: starting out with a newly purchased EG? Get it off to a good start right away with a fresh engine oil filter, a new air filter and engine oil. That way you know exactly what you're starting with.
