Yanmar F210H & F250H Troubleshooting: From Starting Problems to a Stuck Lift

Troubleshooting Yanmar F210H/F250H faults: from starting problems to a lift that stays stuck

Won't your Yanmar F210H start, is the F250H overheating, or won't the lift come up? The original manual (ON03-00616) contains a complete troubleshooting table. We've translated it and supplemented it with practical experiences from owners of this grey-import series.

Applies to the Yanmar Forte F210H and F250H; the engine section also applies to the gear-shift versions F-190 through F-250.

Yanmar F210H/F250H starter motor doesn't turn

Check point Solution
Clutch pedal fully depressed? Otherwise the safety switch blocks the starter motor — by far the most "solved fault" in this series
Battery discharged or fluid level too low? Top up with demineralized water and charge fully (battery: 12 V / 55 Ah, type 80D26R)
Battery terminals loose or corroded? Clean, tighten, and grease
Main fuse (fusible link) blown? Replace and trace the cause (short circuit)
Ignition switch or starter motor faulty? Replace or have it reconditioned

Yanmar F210H/F250H engine turns over but doesn't start

Check whether there is fuel in the tank, whether the fuel tap is set to "O," and whether there is air in the fuel system. After running out of fuel or replacing the filter, the system must be bled — the manual describes the bleeding procedure at the fuel filter. From practical experience: with persistent cold-start problems, also check whether the thermostart is actually receiving fuel (the small reservoir near the intake manifold) and whether the thermostart indicator light on the dashboard comes on; if the light stays off, often only the fuse is blown.

Yanmar F210H/F250H engine runs irregularly or smokes

Symptom Probable cause Solution
Irregular RPM Air or water in the fuel, clogged fuel filter, contaminated injector Bleed the system, drain water, replace filter, have injectors tested
Loss of power Clogged air filter; also: injectors, compression, valve clearance, injection timing Clean/replace air filter; the rest is workshop work
Black smoke under load Lack of air or overload Check air filter, reduce load

Yanmar F210H/F250H overheats

Check in this order: coolant level, tension and condition of the V-belt (deflection 10–15 mm), contamination of the radiator screen and cooling fins, engine oil level, and finally the load — prolonged heavy work in too high a gear is quickly too much to ask at 21 hp. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

Yanmar F210H/F250H warning lights while driving

Oil pressure light on: stop immediately, check oil level and oil viscosity; if it stays on, have the pressure switch or oil pump checked. Charge indicator light on: first check the V-belt, then the voltage regulator. Thermostart light does nothing during preglow: check the fuse.

Yanmar F210H/F250H clutch, brakes, and lift

Symptom Check point Solution
Clutch slips or doesn't disengage Pedal play Adjust to 15–25 mm
Brakes grip poorly or unevenly Left/right pedal play Adjust both to 25–35 mm, equal to each other
Brake pedal returns slowly or squeaks Return spring and pivot points Replace spring, remove rust, and lubricate
Lift won't come up Lowering speed/oil stop valve closed? Transmission oil level? Filter clogged? Air in the suction line? Open the valve, top up oil, replace filter, check couplings; only then look at the pump or control valve
Lift doesn't respond to the reverse/headland automatic system Switch and fuse of the backup circuit Check contact, replace fuse (15 A)

In all diagnoses, keep in mind the golden rule from the manual: turn off the engine before searching for a fault, and never work under a raised implement without support.

Parts tip: commonly used parts for these faults: the fuel filter (SKU-150007), the air filter (SKU-20017), the alternator 12V/20A (SKU-120006) and the glow plug for Yanmar 3TN engines (SKU-551216, verify against engine number). Can't figure it out? Send us the symptom and your engine number.
