Compact tractor for a country estate of 3 to 20 hectares: avenues, woodland, lawn and transport

For a country estate of 3 to 20 hectares, choose a compact tractor of 35 to 60 hp and 1,100 to 2,000 kg, with four-wheel drive, a front loader and a hydraulic pump that delivers 30 to 60 l/min. Because you put in a lot of hours and cover long distances between avenues, woodland, lawn and barn, a cab and a top speed of 30 km/h are not a luxury. A Japanese grey import of 15 to 25 hp is too light for this work and, at 12 to 15 km/h, too slow.

What makes a country estate different from a hobby garden

On a country estate the tractor runs almost every week, and it’s different work every time.

• Distances. From the barn to the furthest avenue or woodland plot is easily a few kilometres, sometimes over the public road.
• Variety. Mowing the lawn neatly, flailing verges, clearing leaves, extracting timber from the woods, carting soil and gravel with a tipping trailer.
• Hours. An estate tractor clocks up a lot of operating hours, so comfort and parts availability weigh more heavily.

Which compact tractor for a country estate: hp, weight, cab and transmission

Power. Count on 35 to 60 hp and look at PTO power, because that drives the mower and the wood chipper. It’s about 80 to 85 percent of engine power: 35 hp gives around 28 to 30 hp at the PTO.

Weight. 1,100 to 2,000 kg gives grip for a tipping trailer on wet grass, stability with a full loader bucket and counterweight for a winch.

Lift capacity. Manufacturers usually quote lift capacity at the ball ends. An implement hangs further back: on the Kubota BX2380 it’s 550 kg at the ball ends against 310 kg at 61 cm behind them, over 40 percent less.

Cab. On long days in autumn and winter, a cab gives you heating, comfort and above all less noise. Without a cab, wear ear protection when mowing and chipping. Whether a cab is available differs per model.

A lot of front loader work? Choose a hydrostatic transmission. Mainly tipping trailer and flail mower at a fixed speed? Then a manual gearbox will do.

Speed matters: 25 to 34 km/h and registration

A woodland plot 3 km away: at 13 km/h you’re on the road for almost 14 minutes, at 30 km/h for 6 minutes. There and back, that saves more than a quarter of an hour.

If you go on the public road, even just to cross it, the RDW (Dutch vehicle authority) requires the tractor to be registered and, since 1 January 2025, to carry a number plate. According to Rijksoverheid (the Dutch government) you then need a category T driving licence. With a number plate the maximum outside built-up areas is 40 km/h, and inside them usually 25 km/h. Without a plate you are no longer allowed on the road since 2025. Third-party liability insurance is compulsory, even on your own land; the APK (periodic roadworthiness test) only applies above 40 km/h (last checked on 24 September 2026; check the current rules with the RDW). Front loader and hydraulics for tipping trailer, wood chipper and grab

The front loader does the heavy lifting: soil, gravel, logs, bales and pallets. Don’t work with the pivot point figure from the brochure, but with the lift capacity 500 mm in front of the pivot point, where the load actually hangs.

Roughly speaking, with pallet forks you’re left with about 60 percent of the pivot point figure, with a bucket about 80 percent and with a log grab well under half (indicative). Keep at least 25 percent of the total weight on the rear axle with a three-point weight or wheel weights.

For a grab or bale clamp you need a third function: an extra double-acting valve, separately from about €200 excl. VAT (indicative). A hydraulic grab needs 30 l/min or more, and a hydraulically driven wood chipper also needs a lot. Look at the output for the linkage and valves, separate from the steering pump: on the Kubota L1-382 30.6 l/min plus 18.6 for the steering, on the Iseki TG5390 34.4 plus 20.6 l/min. Mowing on a country estate: lawn, avenues, rough ground and leaves

Mowing takes the most hours. A neat lawn and a rough woodland edge ask for different things, so one mower is rarely enough.

On a flail mower, Y-flails chop grass finely and hammer flails are more robust with branches. The collector flail mower mows, collects and scarifies in one pass and also clears leaves. The Peruzzo Koala 1600 is 1,475 mm wide with a 900-litre hopper; the Panther series goes up to 60 hp with 1,200 to 2,100 litres and hydraulic tipping.

Work out the width from the PTO power and choose a mower at least as wide as the track. An overrunning clutch in the driveline stops the spinning mass from pushing the tractor forward; a slip clutch or shear bolt protects against stumps. If the shear bolts break often, look for the cause: engaging at high revs, obstacles or a worn bolt hole. Everything about mower types is in finishing mower, pasture topper or flail mower.

Woodland and timber: winch, wood chipper, log splitter and tyres

With woodland, the forestry winch often determines the tractor class. Count on 30 to 50 hp and at least 1,300 kg: the tractor is the anchor the winch pulls against.

A 330 kg winch pulls the rear end down: check the lift capacity at a distance and add weight at the front. With category 2 mounting you need a matching top link and pins. A wood chipper is limited by PTO power, a hydraulic log splitter by the pump: count on 30 l/min or more.

Tyres and ballast. An agricultural tread pulls better in the woods, but leaves ruts in the lawn; turf tyres spare the grass and give less grip. Tyre filling adds weight without taking up the linkage: according to the Kubota manual for the LA525, an 11.2-24 tyre filled to 75 percent takes about 105 kg of water, and up to 160 kg with calcium chloride.

Models for a country estate: compact tractors of 35 to 60 hp

Second-hand. Examples from the market: a 2012 John Deere 1026R with 1,415 hours for about €12,500 excl. VAT, or a Kubota STV40 for about €19,500 (both indicative). A 1026R (25 hp, 13.2 l/min) is at the low end of what a country estate calls for. For woodland work alone you sometimes see older Japanese tractors such as the Hinomoto E2304 or Yanmar YM2210 (PTO 540/1000), but as the main tractor a grey import with 12 to 15 km/h and a small pump is too limited.

A wheel loader or mini excavator alongside the tractor?

With a lot of loading work around the barn, a yard loader is sometimes smarter than a heavier front loader. A Weidemann Hoftrac 1160 (25 hp) has a tipping load of 1,070 to 1,450 kg (with a bucket it may lift about half of that), compared with about 700 kg on the front loader of a 40 hp compact tractor, and lifts up to 2.74 to 2.95 m. Other examples are Schäffer, Avant and Giant, the latter often with a Kubota D1105 or V1505 engine. Drawback: no three-point linkage, no 540 PTO and slow on the road. Mowing and winching remain tractor work.

Maintaining a compact tractor that clocks up a lot of hours

Intervals differ per model; follow the manual. With a lot of hours, pay extra attention to these points:

• Air filter. Mowing dry grass and leaves produces a lot of dust. Check the air filter (SKU-20004) more often than the schedule says.
• Radiator. Behind a mower the radiator clogs up. Blow it clean regularly; for a dirty cooling system a cooling system cleaner (SKU-125007) helps.
• Filters and oil. With a filter set you replace everything in one service. Check in the manual whether STOU GL-4 (SKU-15W402) is specified for the transmission and hydraulics.
• Front axle and oil seals. Loader work puts strain on bearings, front and rear axle oil seals and steering parts. For the Kubota LA525 the manual specifies greasing all grease nipples every 10 hours. Check bolts and hoses daily.
• Three-point linkage. A winch or heavy mower puts strain on lift arms, top link and pins. Check for play and replace worn pins in good time.
• Lighting. With registration on the road, everything must work. You’ll find headlights, rear lights and indicators for many Kubota and Iseki models with us.
• Mower. A flail mower needs a service roughly every 100 to 150 hours (indicative): flails, gearbox oil and belt tension.
