Yanmar F210H & F250H Buying Guide: Advice for the Forte Series

Buying a Yanmar F210H & F250H? Buying advice for the Forte series

The Yanmar F210H and F250H are compact tractors from the Japanese Forte series that often end up in the Netherlands and Belgium as grey imports. Anyone looking to buy a Yanmar F210H or F250H gets a solid mini tractor with a continuously variable HST transmission — but there are a few things you should know before buying. This guide is based on the original Japanese manual (ON03-00616) for the F210H and F250H.

This guide focuses primarily on the HST versions F210H and F250H. The gear-shift versions from the same Forte family (F-190, F-210, F-230 and F-250) are very similar in structure, but have a manual gearbox instead of the continuously variable HST.

Yanmar Forte series: which versions are there?

Yanmar built the Forte series in the 1990s for the Japanese domestic market. The "H" after the type number stands for hydrostatic transmission (HST): you select one of three ranges and control the speed continuously, without shifting gears or using the clutch while driving. This makes the F210H and F250H very pleasant for loader work, mowing and tilling on smaller plots. The gear-shift versions have a conventional gearbox and are slightly cheaper to buy, but less comfortable for work involving frequent changes of direction.

Yanmar F210H or F250H: the differences

Feature F210H F250H
Engine Yanmar 3TNET78A, 3 cylinders, 1,204 cc Yanmar 3TNE82A, 3 cylinders, 1,330 cc
Power (manual) 21 hp at 2,500 rpm 21 hp at 2,500 rpm*
Weight (with 3-point linkage) 895 kg 920 kg
Fuel tank 18 liters 22 liters
Tires front / rear 6.00-12 / 8.3-24 6-14 / 9.5-22
Width 1,150 mm 1,210 mm

* The manual lists 21 hp at 2,500 rpm for both models. External sources state approximately 24.7 hp for the F-250 (gear-shift version) — that figure is indicative. The practical difference lies mainly in the larger displacement of the F250H: more torque, meaning it bogs down less quickly under load.

Yanmar F210H/F250H: checkpoints for viewing

Take your time for these points during a viewing — they come directly from the technical specifications of this series:

  • Cold start. Ask whether the engine is cold and start it yourself. Note: the starter motor only turns when the clutch pedal is fully depressed (safety switch). Wait until the thermostart light goes out before starting. A healthy engine catches within a few seconds.
  • HST transmission. Drive forward and backward in all three ranges. The HST should respond immediately and smoothly. Delayed response or whining can indicate worn HST components or a neglected HST oil filter — the manual prescribes replacement every 300 hours, something that is often skipped on import machines.
  • Lift mechanism. Lower and raise the linkage with an implement attached. If the linkage won't lift, first check whether the lowering speed valve (oil stop valve) is closed — a classic "false fault" on this series.
  • Brakes. Pedal free play should be 25–35 mm, and the left and right brakes should engage evenly. Uneven braking can be adjusted, but indicates deferred maintenance.
  • Clutch. Free play 15–25 mm. Test for slipping by pulling away under load in the highest range.
  • 4WD and differential lock. Engage both and check that they engage properly and release again.
  • Fluids. Milky transmission oil (water ingress) or rust-brown coolant are reasons to look further. The transmission holds 23.5 liters of oil that also feeds the hydraulics and power steering — contamination therefore immediately affects three systems.
  • Hour meter. These tractors come from Japan with often low hour readings. Judge the condition of pedal rubbers, steering play (max. 20–50 mm) and paintwork rather than relying blindly on the meter.

Parts for the Yanmar F210H and F250H

Wear and maintenance parts are readily available. Filters, gaskets, an alternator or an ignition switch for the F210 and F250 can simply be found in our range. A few examples:

Parts tip: for this series, check out among others the air filter for the Yanmar F180–F250 (SKU-20017), the 12V/20A alternator for the F210 and F250 (SKU-120006) and the ignition switch with pre-glow position (SKU-IGS8). Not sure about fit? Send us your engine number and we'll figure it out.

Who is the Yanmar F210H/F250H suitable for?

With 21 hp, a continuously variable transmission and a weight of around 900 kg, this series is ideal for hobby farmers, horse owners, market gardeners and landscape maintenance. Think of tilling (it was supplied as standard with a 150–160 cm rotary tiller), mowing, transport with a small tipping trailer, and work in stables or orchards where a large tractor can't reach. If you mainly need heavier towing work, take a look at the larger AF series.
