Mitsubishi K4 cooling: water pump, thermostat and preventing overheating

Overheating is the number one cause of expensive damage to the Mitsubishi K4: a blown head gasket, warped cylinder head or seized pistons can almost always be traced back to a cooling system that wasn't in good order. In this guide you'll learn how the cooling system of the four-cylinder K4 works, which parts wear out, and how to prevent overheating.

How the cooling system of the Mitsubishi K4 works

The K4 has a pressurized cooling system with forced circulation: a centrifugal water pump, driven by the V-belt, circulates the coolant through the block, the head, the thermostat and the radiator. The thermostat opens at around 82 °C and keeps the engine at operating temperature. The coolant capacity (block only, excluding radiator and hoses) is 3.5 liters for the K4E and K4F and 3.7 liters for the K4M.

Parts that wear out

Three parts determine whether your cooling system stays reliable:

  • Water pump. Leakage at the weep hole under the pump or play on the shaft means the pump needs replacing. When installing, always replace the supplied gasket and check the coolant for contamination — dirt speeds up wear on the new pump.
  • Thermostat. A thermostat stuck open causes the engine to run too cold (more wear, higher consumption); stuck closed leads to overheating. If in doubt, replace it — it's a cheap part with major consequences.
  • Radiator and hoses. Clogged or dirty radiator fins and hardened, cracked hoses restrict cooling. Hoses harden over the years and start leaking; replace them preventively.

Overheating: tracing the cause step by step

If your K4 is running too hot, first check the obvious things: coolant level and leakage, a slack V-belt and clogged radiator fins. Then work through the causes systematically, in this order:

  1. Is the cooling system in good order? Think of a leaking head gasket, a clogged water pump, silted-up hoses or radiator, or a faulty thermostat. If not → repair the cooling system.
  2. Is the injection timing correct? Timing that's too early or incorrect makes the engine run hotter. If not → adjust the injection timing.
  3. Is the lubrication system in good order? Too low an oil level, a clogged oil filter or a weak oil pump generate extra heat. If not → check the lubrication system.
  4. Does the throttle/control mechanism work normally? If not → check the governor or injection pump.
  5. If everything checks out fine, the engine is simply being run continuously under too heavy a load.

A practical tip from the workshop manual: overheating is often caused by an incorrect combination of engine and machine. When overheating occurs, measure the difference between the coolant temperature and the ambient temperature — if it's more than 60 °C, the cause often lies outside the engine itself (for example in the driven machine or the load).

Preventing overheating: maintenance tips

  • Keep the radiator fins clean — blow them out regularly, especially when working in dusty conditions.
  • Change the coolant periodically and use a good antifreeze/anti-corrosion mixing ratio.
  • Check the V-belt for tension (deflection of 10–12 mm) and for cracks.
  • Replace hardened or cracked hoses in time; they're cheap compared to the damage caused by a system running dry.
  • Watch for early warning signs: a creeping temperature gauge, a boiling reservoir or coolant loss without visible leakage (possibly a head gasket).
