Suitable for the entire Kubota GL series: GL201, GL221, GL241, GL261, GL277, GL281, GL301, GL321, GL337, GL367, GL417 and GL467 (also known as the Hinomoto NX series). The faults and solutions below apply to the entire series.
You turn the key and your Kubota GL series tractor (GL201 through GL467) won't start, runs erratically, or overheats. Frustrating – but with this reliable diesel tractor, the cause usually lies in a handful of known points. In this blog, I'll go through the most common problems along with their cause and solution, so you can search in a targeted way instead of guessing.
With a diesel engine that won't fire up when cold, start with the starting and glow system:
If the engine hesitates or lacks pull, check the fuel supply: a clogged fuel filter or air filter is the classic culprit. Replace them according to the maintenance schedule. Air in the fuel system also causes erratic running – bleed it via the bleed screw on the fuel pump. If the problem persists, the injectors or injection system may need attention; that's a job for the workshop.
If the GL201 overheats, check:
No response when turning the key? First check the fuses. Always replace a blown fuse with one of the same rating – an overrated fuse can cause a fire. Then check the battery and wiring.
If the tractor has been standing still for a long time, the clutch plate may stick. That's why Kubota recommends keeping the clutch pedal locked when storing the tractor. If the clutch does stick, don't force it – read our blog about storage and putting back into use.
