Kubota GL201 – GL301 – GL467 won't start? Troubleshooting

Suitable for the entire Kubota GL series: GL201, GL221, GL241, GL261, GL277, GL281, GL301, GL321, GL337, GL367, GL417 and GL467 (also known as the Hinomoto NX series). The faults and solutions below apply to the entire series.

You turn the key and your Kubota GL series tractor (GL201 through GL467) won't start, runs erratically, or overheats. Frustrating – but with this reliable diesel tractor, the cause usually lies in a handful of known points. In this blog, I'll go through the most common problems along with their cause and solution, so you can search in a targeted way instead of guessing.

The GL201 doesn't start or starts poorly (especially cold)

With a diesel engine that won't fire up when cold, start with the starting and glow system:

  • Glow plugs – the most common cause of poor cold starting. One or more faulty glow plugs and the engine won't catch. Check and replace them as a set.
  • Glow relay – controls the glow plugs. If the relay doesn't work, the plugs won't heat up.
  • Battery – too weak to start smoothly? Check the fluid level and voltage, and clean the battery terminals.
  • Fuel – empty or contaminated tank, a clogged fuel filter, or air in the system. Bleed the fuel system after replacing the filter or after running dry.

The engine runs erratically or lacks power

If the engine hesitates or lacks pull, check the fuel supply: a clogged fuel filter or air filter is the classic culprit. Replace them according to the maintenance schedule. Air in the fuel system also causes erratic running – bleed it via the bleed screw on the fuel pump. If the problem persists, the injectors or injection system may need attention; that's a job for the workshop.

The engine overheats

If the GL201 overheats, check:

  • Coolant level and the correct antifreeze mixing ratio (an incorrect mix causes overheating in summer).
  • The V-belt (fan belt): a loose belt charges poorly and cools insufficiently. Tighten or replace it.
  • A dirty radiator or clogged cooling fins – blow them clean.
  • Old radiator hoses or a stuck thermostat (replace hoses every 2 years).

Electrical: nothing happens

No response when turning the key? First check the fuses. Always replace a blown fuse with one of the same rating – an overrated fuse can cause a fire. Then check the battery and wiring.

The clutch sticks after prolonged standstill

If the tractor has been standing still for a long time, the clutch plate may stick. That's why Kubota recommends keeping the clutch pedal locked when storing the tractor. If the clutch does stick, don't force it – read our blog about storage and putting back into use.

💡 Shop4trac tip: Does the GL201 start poorly when cold? Keep the glow plug D1403 (SKU-55814) and the glow relay (SKU-123007) in stock. For overheating, check the thermostat with housing (SKU-460010).
