The Mitsubishi MT161 through MT241, together with the MTZ models, form the "Pal-seed GS" series: compact Japanese 4WD mini tractors from 16 to 24 hp. They are widely available in the Netherlands as grey imports and are known as sturdy workhorses for market gardeners, hobby farmers, riding schools, and contract work on small plots. In this blog you can read which models and versions exist, what to look out for when buying, and what a good example costs at the moment.
Suitable for the entire series: Mitsubishi MT161, MT161S, MT181, MT201, MT221, MT241, MT241S, MTZ18, MTZ20, MTZ200, MTZ21 and MTZ23.
All models in the series have four-wheel drive, a water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine, wet disc brakes, and a 3-point hitch with position control. Technically, the series is divided into two groups: the light group with the 1.125-litre S3L engine and the heavy group with the 1.318-litre S3L2 engine.
| Model | Power | Engine | Weight | Transmission | Steering system |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MT161 / MT161S | 16 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L (1,125 cc) | 775–810 kg | 6 forward / 3 reverse | Mechanical (P version: power steering) |
| MT181 / MTZ18 | 18 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L (1,125 cc) | 820 kg | 6 forward / 3 reverse | Mechanical (P: power steering) |
| MTZ200 / MTZ20 | 20 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L (1,125 cc) | 820 kg | 6 forward / 3 reverse | Mechanical (P: power steering) |
| MT201 / MT201W | 20 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L2 (1,318 cc) | 895–900 kg | 8 forward / 8 reverse | Power steering standard |
| MTZ21 | 21 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L2 (1,318 cc) | 895 kg | 8 forward / 8 reverse | Power steering standard |
| MT221 | 22 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L2 (1,318 cc) | 900 kg | 8 forward / 8 reverse | Power steering standard |
| MTZ23 | 23 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L2 (1,318 cc) | 900 kg | 8 forward / 8 reverse | Power steering standard |
| MT241 / MT241S | 24 hp / 2500 rpm | S3L2 (1,318 cc) | 900–920 kg | 8F/8R (241S: 12F/8R) | Power steering standard |
The MT241S is the most distinctive of the series: a lower step-through design ("low-profile"), a longer wheelbase of 1,525 mm, and a 12-speed transmission with creep gears from 0.25 km/h — ideal for planting and harvesting work.
Behind the type number on the type plate, you'll often find letter codes. These tell you exactly which version you have:
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P | Power steering (optional on the light group, standard from the MT201 onward) |
| J / M | JAC or MAC version: more extensive electronic lift control (in addition to the basic PAC). MAC is the most complete version, featuring automatic depth control among other things |
| W | Wide tyres (e.g. MT201W with 9.5-22 rear tyres) |
| E | Super creep gear (extra slow driving speeds) |
| S | On the MT161: smaller tyres; on the MT241: low-profile version |
All models come standard with a reversible PTO (reverse PTO, for original Mitsubishi rotary tillers) and the "Dia Quick Turn" function, which automatically engages the inner rear brake when turning at the headland for a tight turning circle.
The engines from the S3L family are considered exceptionally durable; the same base engine is still used today in mini excavators, generators, and compact tractors from other brands. The machines are compact (at least 1,065 mm wide for the MT161S), manoeuvrable with a turning circle from 1.8 metres, and thanks to the wet brakes and simple mechanical technology, there is little that can go wrong. Parts such as filters, water pumps, thermostats, and engine components are readily available.
To be fair — there are also points to watch out for. In practice, the following issues come up most often: worn or burnt-out glow plugs (poor cold starting), leaking seals in the front axle with 4WD use, play in the steering knuckle bushings, and clogged fuel filters or air in the fuel system after running the tank dry. On machines that have had the wrong transmission oil in them for years, the wet brakes can start to judder or slip — the series requires GL-4 80W oil suitable for wet brakes. The market value depends heavily on operating hours, tyre condition, registration, and whether implements are included. Based on current supply in the Netherlands (reference date July 2026), you'll see roughly these prices:
| Condition | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Project machine / high hours, without registration | € 2,000 – € 3,500 |
| Well-maintained used machine, average hours, with registration | € 3,500 – € 5,000 |
| Top example: low hours, new tyres, ready to use immediately | € 4,750 – € 6,500 |
| With front loader or set of implements | € 500 – € 1,500 extra |
These amounts are indicative and based on asking prices from dealers and private sellers; ex-VAT prices from dealers appear lower on paper. The heavier models (MT221, MTZ23, MT241) typically fetch several hundred euros more than the light group due to their extra power and standard power steering.
Start the engine cold and pay attention to the glow time and the colour of the exhaust fumes: white smoke after the warm-up phase indicates coolant or too much oil, blue indicates oil consumption. Check whether the 4WD engages and disengages properly, whether the diff lock automatically releases after the pedal is released, and whether the lift raises and lowers smoothly. Check under the front axle for oil leaks at the steering knuckles, press both brake pedals independently (the tractor should pull toward the pressed side), and check the clutch play (20–30 mm is factory spec). Always ask for the type plate: the machine number is stamped on the right side of the chassis and the engine number on the right side of the engine block — this way you know exactly which version you're buying and can order parts correctly later. Incidentally, Mitsubishi maintained a parts supply period of 12 years after production stopped for this series; original parts are therefore scarce, and aftermarket quality is the common route.
💡 Product tip: Want to give it a complete maintenance service right after purchase? Order the filter set Mitsubishi MT14–MT20 (SKU-10007) for the light group or the filter set Mitsubishi MT21–MT26 (SKU-10085) for the heavier models. Not sure which set matches your version? Send us the type and engine number, and we'll find out for you.
