Good maintenance is the reason why so many Kubota KL's are still working daily after thirty years. In this article you'll find the complete maintenance schedule for the Kubota KL series as prescribed by the factory, supplemented with the official adjustment values for the clutch, brakes and V-belt.
Suitable for the entire KL series: KL21, KL23, KL25, KL27, KL30, KL33, KL36, KL43 and the H-variants KL28H, KL31H, KL34H, KL38H, KL41H, KL46H and KL50H.
After the first 50 operating hours (or after an overhaul), Kubota prescribes a break-in service: changing the engine oil, replacing the engine oil filter, and checking the clutch pedal play. After 100 hours, the first change of transmission oil and the hydraulic oil filter follow. If you buy an imported KL without maintenance history, it's wise to carry out this "first service" in full — that way you know exactly where you stand.
| Component | Action | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | change | first time 50 hrs, then every 100 hrs |
| Engine oil filter | replace | first time 50 hrs, then every 200 hrs |
| Hydraulic oil filter | replace | first time 100 hrs, then every 200 hrs |
| Transmission oil | change | first time 100 hrs, then every 400 hrs |
| Front axle oil | change | every 300 hrs |
| Lubrication points (grease nipples) | grease | every 50 hrs |
| Starting system, wheel bolts, fuel lines, power steering hoses | check | every 50 hrs |
| Clutch housing water drain | drain | every 50 hrs |
| Battery, air filter (clean), V-belt, clutch and brake pedal | check/adjust | every 100 hrs |
| Steering linkages, radiator hoses, toe-in/tie rods | check | every 200 hrs |
| Fuel filter element | replace | every 400 hrs |
| Front axle differential play | adjust | every 600 hrs |
| Valve clearance | check | every 800 hrs |
| Air filter element | replace | annually |
| Coolant, radiator and fuel hoses, steering hoses | replace/flush | every 2 years |
If you use the tractor less than 100 hours per year, check the battery acid at least once a year. Cabin models have additional intervals: clean the interior and exterior air filters and the air conditioning condenser every 200 hours, and tension the air conditioning belt every 200 hours.
These three adjustments determine the difference between a pleasant and a worn-out KL. The clutch pedal play should be 20 to 30 mm, adjustable with the lock nut on the clutch rod. Too little play causes the clutch to slip; too much makes shifting heavy. The brake pedal play is 15 to 20 mm per pedal, adjustable with the tensioning screw, and the difference between left and right may not exceed 5 mm — a brake that pulls to one side is dangerous on the road. The V-belt should deflect approximately 7 mm in the middle of the belt under about 10 kgf of thumb pressure; adjust by shifting the alternator. A slack belt means poor cooling and a dead battery.
In the KL series, the transmission, hydraulics and wet brakes share the same oil. Contaminated oil or a saturated filter is therefore noticeable not only in a slow lift, but also in poor shifting and grabbing brakes. Stick strictly to the 200-hour interval for the hydraulic oil filter, especially with a tractor of unknown history.
Tip from Shop4trac: order everything for the major service in one go: filter set Kubota KL21–KL33 (SKU-10102), hydraulic filter (SKU-250006), 15W40 engine oil and a V-belt (SKU-124018).
