An honest buying guide with key points, versions, price indication and parts check.

The Iseki SIAL series — consisting of the TF15, TF17 and TF19 — is one of the most popular compact tractor lines for hobby farmers, landscapers and small agricultural businesses. Built by the Japanese manufacturer Iseki (井関農機) with their reliable E-series three-cylinder diesel engines, these tractors are designed for daily heavy-duty work in a compact size. Whether you're tilling a vegetable garden, mowing a meadow or clearing snow: the SIAL series can handle it.
What makes these tractors so popular on the used market? A few things stand out when you look at the technical specifications:
Reliable diesel engines. The TF15 runs on an Iseki E390-DB (900cc, 15.5 HP), the TF17 on an E3100-DB (1006cc, 17.5 HP) and the TF19 on an E3112-DB (1123cc, 19 HP). These are all water-cooled, three-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines. These engines are known for their long lifespan — provided you keep up with maintenance.
Standard 4WD. All three models feature four-wheel drive. On the standard version you engage this with a lever; on the V version you even get full-time 4WD with three modes (free, lock and auto).
Compact and maneuverable. With a length of just 2500mm and a turning circle of 1.70 to 1.80 meters, you can get anywhere. Ideal for narrow paths, greenhouses and small plots.
Versatile PTO. The PTO shaft has three speeds, giving you flexibility when connecting different implements. Some versions even have a reverse switch for the PTO rotation direction.
Huge range of versions. There are more than 20 different specification codes, allowing you to find exactly the configuration that suits your work.
The SIAL series is available in a considerable number of versions. On the type plate you'll find letter codes indicating which options your tractor has. Here's the complete overview:
| Code | Meaning | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| G | Linear shift + power steering | Forward/reverse shifting with a single lever. Very convenient. |
| U | Power steering | Standard power steering, shifting with normal levers. |
| K | Super full-turn | Improved turning circle for wet rice fields and small plots. |
| WX | Electronic hydraulics | Automatic depth control and leveling control via electronic control panel. |
| D | Meca-auto (auto-rotary) | Mechanical automatic depth control for the tiller. |
| V | Full-time 4WD | Automatic switching between 2WD and 4WD. Ideal for varying terrain. |
| N | Low floor | Lower step-in, more compact build. |
| HJ | High bed (dry field) | Higher ground clearance for crop rows. Adjustable track width. |
| HS | High bed (wet field) | High bed with wet-field configuration. |
| R | Sun canopy | Protection against sun and light rain. |
| J | Adjustable track width | Track adjustable in 4-5 steps. |
| Z | PTO reverse switch | PTO can rotate in both directions. Handy for earthmoving. |
| P | Foldable safety frame (ROPS) | Standard on most versions. |
| L | Creep gear | Extra low speeds for precision work (from 0.17 km/h). |
| SC | Cabin (order) | Enclosed cabin with windshield wiper, radio and heating. |
| CW | Weather cabin (order) | Lighter cabin for protection against rain. |
Most sought-after version: The WX version (electronic hydraulics) is the most popular among users who till frequently. The automatic depth control and leveling control save an enormous amount of manual adjustment. For hobby use, the U version (power steering) is perfectly fine — simple, reliable and less electronics that can break down.
Buying a used mini tractor is exciting, but don't get carried away. Check the following:
Chassis and engine number. The chassis number is located on the right front of the frame, the engine number on the right side of the engine block. Note both numbers before purchase and verify them with the importer or dealer.
Engine condition. Start the engine cold and watch the exhaust color. White smoke on startup is normal (glow period). Persistent white smoke indicates coolant in the cylinders — an expensive repair. Black smoke indicates fuel system problems (injectors, air filter). Blue smoke means oil consumption.
Hour meter. The hour meter has 5 digits, with the last digit representing 1/6 hour. A reading of 2000-3000 hours is normal for a well-maintained unit. Above 4000 hours, extra caution is advised — ask about maintenance history.
Hydraulics. Test the 3-point hitch: does it move smoothly up and down? No jerking or hesitation? Check whether the lowering speed control works properly. Leaking hoses and cylinders are relatively simple, but a defective hydraulic pump is costly.
Clutch. Press the clutch pedal and feel whether it engages smoothly. A slipping clutch is a common wear part.
4WD operation. Engage 4WD and drive a lap. Both front wheels should be pulling along. Crunching or ticking sounds from the front axle indicate wear.
Oil leakage. Crawl under the tractor and look for oil stains near the engine, transmission, front axle and hydraulic cylinders. A bit of sweating is normal on an older tractor, dripping oil is not.
[TO CHECK: research current market prices — figures below are rough indications]
The value depends heavily on hours used, version (WX is worth more than base), and overall condition. As an indication:
| Model | Condition/hours | Indicative price range |
|---|---|---|
| TF15 | Good, <3000 hours | €3,500 – €5,500 |
| TF17 | Good, <3000 hours | €4,000 – €6,500 |
| TF19 | Good, <3000 hours | €4,500 – €7,000 |
| All | Fair, >4000 hours | €2,000 – €3,500 |
WX or SC versions (electronic lift or cabin) are generally worth €500-€1500 more. A tractor with a tiller included is more attractive than without.
| Feature | TF15 | TF17 | TF19 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | E390-DB | E3100-DB | E3112-DB |
| Displacement | 900cc | 1006cc | 1123cc |
| Power | 11.4 kW (15.5 HP) | 12.9 kW (17.5 HP) | 13.9 kW (19 HP) |
| Weight (standard) | 700 kg | 715 kg | 735 kg |
| Front tire | 5.00-12 4PR | 6-12 4PR | 6.00-12 4PR |
| Rear tire | 8-18 4PR | 8.3-20 4PR | 8.3-22 4PR |
| Turning circle | 1.70 m | 1.80 m | 1.80 m |
Which to choose? The TF17 is the sweet spot: enough power for most implements, but not as heavy as the TF19. The TF15 is fine for light work (mowing, light tilling), but hits its limits with heavy tilling or plowing. The TF19 is the workhorse if you regularly do heavy soil cultivation.
One of the major advantages of the Iseki SIAL series: parts are still readily available. At Shop4trac we have over 40 products in stock that fit the TF15, TF17 and/or TF19 — from complete filter kits and head gaskets to cylinder heads and clutch kits.
