A tractor is a powerful machine, and most accidents happen due to carelessness, not bad luck. The manual for the Iseki TE4270 puts it this way: the best safety mechanism is a careful operator. Below are the most important rules, taken directly from the source and supplemented with practical experience.
Legal Requirements
Whether you're allowed to take a mini tractor on public roads — and under what conditions — differs per country and changes regularly. The manual doesn't cover this, so always check the current rules with the relevant authority. This is general information, not legal advice.
Netherlands: consult the RDW for registration and license plate requirements, and for the required T driving licence. Third-party liability insurance is mandatory.
Belgium: consult the FOD Mobiliteit and the DIV for registration/license plate requirements, and the G driving licence for agricultural and forestry vehicles. Insurance is mandatory.
Check the exact requirements before heading out on the road — they depend on factors such as weight, maximum speed, and the tractor's intended use.
Who May Operate the Tractor?
The manual is strict on this point: don't let the tractor be operated by anyone who isn't alert due to fatigue, illness, or medication, by pregnant women, or by children/young people who are legally not allowed to drive it. Wear suitable clothing (close-fitting, nothing that could get caught) and protect your head, ears, eyes, and airways where necessary.
On Public Roads
Always couple the two brake pedals together. Independently operated brakes on the road can cause the tractor to swerve when braking — extremely dangerous.
Check the lights, reflectors, and make sure the license plate is clean.
Avoid sudden acceleration, steering, or braking at higher speeds.
Working on Slopes

Drive up and down slopes at a safe, low speed, suited to the conditions.
Never descend a slope in neutral. Use engine braking: keep the tractor in gear.
When descending, press both brake pedals together (interlocked).
Pay attention to the centre of gravity; use ballast where needed and be extra careful with a raised implement.
PTO Safety
Always put protective covers back in place and never go near a rotating PTO shaft.
Turn off the engine before adjusting an implement or clearing a blockage.
Maintenance and Safe Standstill
When performing maintenance, engage the parking brake and chock the wheels if necessary.
Do you need to work under a raised implement? Lock the lift and support the implement mechanically — never rely on hydraulics alone.
When working with the engine switched off, remove the key so it can't be started accidentally.
Never refuel with the engine running or hot, and do not smoke near the tank.
Cooling: Be Careful with the Radiator Cap
Never remove the radiator cap never when the engine is hot or running. Let the engine cool down and first turn the cap to the first stop to release the pressure. Hot coolant under pressure can cause severe burns.

Working in an Enclosed Space
Running the engine indoors? Ensure ventilation — open doors and windows. Exhaust fumes are toxic.
