Troubleshooting the Iseki TE4270 — faults, causes and solutions

Is your Iseki TE4270 acting up? Below are the most common problems with their causes and solutions, taken directly from the troubleshooting tables in the manual. ★ = usually a DIY fix · ⚙️ = workshop/mechanic recommended.

Engine won't start

The starter motor doesn't turn (after ON)

  • Clutch pedal not depressed → depress it ★
  • Dead battery → charge it ★
  • Loose/dirty/corroded battery terminals → clean, tighten, grease ★
  • Faulty (safety) switch or starter motor → repair/replace ⚙️

The starter motor turns, but too slowly

  • Dead battery → charge it ★
  • Poor earth connection → clean the earth connection ★
  • Wrong oil viscosity → use the correct oil ★

The starter motor turns normally, but the engine won't fire

  • Air in the fuel system → bleed it ★
  • Clogged fuel strainer → clean or replace the element ★
  • No fuel supply → open the fuel tap ★
  • Glow plugs not connected/faulty → have checked at a workshop ⚙️

Engine runs irregularly

  • Air in the system → bleed it ★ · Clogged strainer → clean/replace ★
  • Clogged injector nozzles → clean/replace ⚙️ · Leaking fuel line → tighten clamps or replace the line ★
  • Incorrect injection timing → have it adjusted at a workshop ⚙️

Engine overheating

Warning: NEVER open the radiator cap when the engine is hot or running.

  • Too little coolant → top up ★
  • Loose or broken V-belt → tighten or replace ★
  • Clogged radiator grille → clean ★
  • Too little engine oil → top up ★

Engine smoking

Colour Meaning Causes
White Oil burning (or water vapour in cold weather) Oil level too high → adjust ★ · insufficient fuel supply → workshop ⚙️
Black Incomplete combustion Clogged air filter → clean ★ · poor fuel quality → replace ★ · mixture too rich/poor injector pressure → workshop ⚙️

Engine stops unexpectedly

  • Too little fuel → refuel + bleed ★
  • Faulty injector nozzles → workshop ⚙️
  • Too little oil / seizure due to lack of oil → workshop ⚙️ (if you can still turn the engine by hand via the V-belt, the injector nozzles are usually the cause)

Loss of power

  • Dirty/carboned-up injector nozzles → workshop ⚙️
  • Insufficient compression / leakage past valve seats → workshop ⚙️
  • Incorrect injection timing → workshop ⚙️ · poor fuel supply / clogged air filter → check/clean ★

Oil pressure warning light stays on during operation

  • Too little oil → top up ★ · oil too thin → use the correct oil ★
  • Faulty oil pressure switch (SKU-910008) → replace ★
  • Clogged oil filter → replace the element ★ · faulty warning light → workshop ⚙️

Clutch, brake and hydraulics

  • Clutch slipping: poor pedal adjustment → readjust ★ · worn plates → workshop ⚙️
  • Clutch won't disengage: rusted plates → workshop ⚙️ · pedal adjustment → readjust ★
  • Poor/uneven braking: too much play → adjust ★ · worn brake lining → workshop ⚙️ · uneven pedal travel → adjust evenly ★
  • Lift won't rise / pressure too low: engine speed too low → increase ★ · too little transmission oil → top up ★ · air entering via the suction line → tighten clamps/replace O-rings ★ · clogged suction filter → clean ★ · faulty pump/control valve/cylinder → workshop ⚙️
  • Lift won't lower: lowering speed knob set to LOCK → turn to LOWERING ★ · faulty control valve/cylinder → workshop ⚙️

Steering

  • Heavy steering / doesn't stay neutral: incorrect toe-in → adjust ★ · uneven tyre pressure → equalise ★ · loose tie rod connections → tighten/replace ★
  • Too much steering play: worn steering shaft/components → workshop ⚙️ · loose tie rod ends → tighten ★

Electrical

  • Battery not charging: wiring, alternator, regulator, V-belt or battery → check/replace (partly ★, partly ⚙️)
  • Headlights not shining brightly: battery capacity too low → charge ★ · poor connections → check ★ · blown bulbs or fuse → replace ★
  • Horn not working: button, wiring, horn → repair/replace ★
  • Turn signals not flashing: blown bulb, flasher unit or poor connection → replace/check ★

When to see a mechanic?

Don't attempt repairs yourself if you suspect: faulty injector nozzles or injection pump, low compression, a seizure, or internal hydraulic/transmission damage. In that case, look for a mechanic experienced with Iseki/Isuzu compact engines — the E3AE1 can be reconditioned well, provided you have the right knowledge and parts.

💡 Shop4trac tip: The three classics are in stock: fuel filter (SKU-150002) for starting problems, thermostat (SKU-45014) and water pump (SKU-321) for overheating, and glow plugs (SKU-554016-6) for cold starting (note: two versions available for the TE4270 — check which one fits).
