Buying an Iseki TE4270? Here’s what you need to know

Buying an Iseki TE4270? Here's what you need to know (2026)

The Iseki TE4270 is one of those compact diesel tractors that simply keeps on running. Decades after leaving the factory, thousands are still at work in gardens, nurseries, municipal green spaces, and orchards. Considering buying one secondhand? This page will help you form a fair judgment: what makes the TE4270 strong, which versions exist, and what to look out for during a viewing.

Strengths of the TE4270

The TE4270 owes its reputation to a few simple, robust choices:

  • Simple, strong diesel engine. The 3-cylinder E3AE1 (1,296 cc, 27 HP) is a water-cooled swirl-chamber diesel without any electronic frills. Almost everything can be serviced with basic tools.
  • Available as both 2WD and 4WD. The 4WD version clearly provides more grip on wet ground and slopes — handy if you're ploughing, tilling, or working in winter.
  • Power steering. The steering system is mechanical with hydraulic assistance, so steering stays light even with an implement mounted on the front.
  • Wide gear range. A main gear selector, a range gear, and a creeper gear together give a travel range of roughly 0.2 to over 21 km/h — from precision work to transport.
  • Differential lock. A locking differential to pull yourself free in the mud.

Versions and options

The manual lists several type codes. What we can confirm with certainty from the source:

  • 2WD or 4WD. The most visible difference. The 4WD has a front-wheel drive axle and a non-adjustable front track width (1,050 mm); the 2WD has a front track width adjustable in two positions (960 or 1,060 mm).
  • Types M, P, and S. These versions offer draft control as an option alongside the standard position control. On types M and S, the transmission is also fully synchronized, allowing you to shift gears while driving.

For everyday garden and grounds work, the 4WD is the most sought-after due to its grip. Mainly doing flat, dry work? Then the 2WD is perfectly adequate and cheaper.

What to look out for when buying

Go through this checklist during a viewing — all points taken directly from the TE4270's maintenance documentation:

  • Cooling. This is THE key point of attention with older compact tractors. Check the radiator grille (clogged with grass/dust?), the hoses, and for leaks. Overheating is the fastest way to ruin a healthy E3AE1.
  • Exhaust smoke. Colourless is good. Black = mixture too rich or dirty air filter; white = burning oil or (in cold weather) simply water vapour. Persistent white/blue smoke at operating temperature is a warning sign.
  • Oil leaks. Check under the engine, at the front axle seals (4WD), the rear axle, and the transmission.
  • Clutch and brakes. Check whether the clutch engages properly and whether both brake pedals work evenly. Uneven braking is dangerous on the road.
  • Steering play. According to the manual, the play at the steering wheel should not exceed 30 mm . More indicates wear in the steering box or tie rod ends.
  • Hour meter reading. The hour meter displays 123.4 hours as "1234". Note the logic: a low hour count in good condition is great, but a tractor that's been sitting idle for years may actually need more attention than one that's been running regularly.

Where is the type number located?

The exact engine and chassis number on the type plate is always decisive when ordering parts. Not sure if a part will fit? Send us a photo of the type plate or serial number and we'll match it.

Value indication

A fair price mainly depends on condition, hours, 2WD/4WD, and whether implements are included. A 4WD in good, ready-to-use condition is clearly worth more than a 2WD project with cooling problems.

Fair condition: €1500 – €2500
Normal condition: €2500 – €3500
Excellent condition: €3500 – €5500

Parts availability

Good news for the TE4270: because the E3AE1 engine (and its relatives) is used in more Iseki models, parts availability is excellent. At Shop4trac, we stock the complete service package — from filters to complete overhaul kits.
